So, this was originally a sketch that I had commissioned from
Strype at AnthroCon 2007. With his permission, I did some work on it myself between then and now. I actually did most of the work many months ago, but redrawing the guns really held me up. Over the last couple days, I've finished it up and stretched my legs a little on trying some new shading techniques. I think it came out fairly well. For those unfamiliar with the character, Jensca is one of my few original characters. No real backstory to her, just a 7 foot tall sexy-hot wolfgirl.

Yes. Much earlier in my artistic career, when I still did a lot of traditional work, I was heavily inspired by the likes of Ashryn and Arphalia's work, and I used much heavier line weights with more variety to them. However, since moving to digital work, my efforts have focused more on reducing my linework and making it as thin as possible while trying to accomplish the majority of definition through shading and color.
Well, I'm afraid your sense of looks is a little off. If you look at real-world SMGs, such as the H&K MP5, they have short barrels and a magwell forward of the grip/trigger. So, this arrangement is rather firmly grounded in reality; as for higher projectile energy... there are no projectiles, as they're energy weapons.
Considering it has a barrel I guessed that it use magnetic fields to accelerate the projectile and there are numerous SMG's that use pistol housed magazines most famous being the Uzi, the H&K MP7 is another example.
As an energy weapon it does make sense as were the power cell is it is at the middle(ish)of the emitter and the energy has less overall resistance in order to project said energy.

The MP7 is more accurately termed a PDW than an SMG; the Uzi you could argue is a SMG or machine pistol, but that's besides the point. The issue at hand is that you thought having the magazine forward of the grip made it "designed for show," when the design has many analogous modern, real world counterparts. Some SMGs have the magwell as part of the grip, some have it seperate.
Otherwise, I think you're overthinking things. Pay less attention to the guns and more attention to the sexy wolfgirl.
