Muscle Matinee, my supers go to the movie theater
Muscle superheroines Jenny 'Feratu the vampire bat and Pratfall the albatross host a B-movie film festival at a small town movie theater. Jenny used to host a Vampira/Elvira-style TV late-night movie show in the 1970s and Pratfall is obsessed with the 1920s, when the theater originated. Also present are their friends Dammage the beaver and Power Hoss the draft horse in their civilian identities as Thomas Brabant and Remi Vitoux, respectively.
Pratfall performs a dress rehearsal of a speech or musical number she'll perform from atop the theater marquee. Jenny meets with the theater owner. Thomas uses his electrical skills to help with the theater's renovation. Remi poses for a photo. And coming down the street are a pair of civilians. The dog has a mocking response, while the cat is excited to see the superheroines. (These two are based somewhat on my stepfather and his friend, who are film buffs. When I listen to Postmodern Jukebox, my stepfather hates it, so I figure he would have a negative response to Pratfall's period-style performance.)
This picture is based on a photo I took of an old theater in Lompoc, California, where I grew up. I don't have much of a sentimental connection to my hometown, but I do remember going to see "The Chipmunk Adventure" at this theater in the 80s. In real life, this theater has tried to get a renovation project going for years. By coincidence, as I was finishing up this picture, I ran across an article on Facebook that they just got a bunch of funding. The real 100th anniversary is in 2027. I don't know the real theater owner at all. For the fictitious one in this picture, I chose a Kiger mustang as a reference to "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron." The horse he was modeled after lives near Lompoc.
Now with color and shading.
