For what it's worth... I was half-asleep when I wrote this, which IMO is often the best time for me (so long as I don't mind generating a few more missing words and typos and such than usual, normally to be fixed in editing later). It was framed as an "externalized inner dialogue narrative", an official-sounding term I just now made up, with heavily symbolic characters and characterization. "Sol" is short for "Solomon", a name often associated with wisdom, "Peter" is a common nickname for a notably impulsive and difficult-to-reason-with male body part. They're very deliberately twins-- the two are, at least hopefully at a certain level in the reader's mind, actually one person. (Note also that Sol excels in "dull" but necessary business skills, and Pete in being madly expressive.) Sol is the Superego, Peter the creative frenzy that is the Id. Thus, "externalized inner dialogue narrative". (There's probably a real, actual name for this sort of approach, but damned if I know what it is.) While you can write a successful story without an underlying emotional framework or "theme" of some kind, in my case I try to find one. I don't always succeed, but I always try.
