Doctor Thurgood - What were you thinking, charging out there in the middle of a battle? Who do you think you are, the protagonist???
Ellie - Well, I'm at least part of the main cast....
Doctor Thurgood - Look at the dents in this plot armor! You know that no one is impervious to dramatic license.
All kidding aside, Ellie is a soldier on a highly advanced train in the far future as depicted in my upcoming novel Winterfall. Her missions tend towards the heroic and dangerous, and occasionally she ends up in the train's medical car, much to the chagrin of the train's CMO, Rachel Thurgood.

Oh, the poor, poor 4th wall.
I love it, though. Sometimes, you can't help but poke a little fun at the standard narrative tropes, even as you indulge in them. But also, you've gotta admire a gal who's not afraid to go out there and take a few risks, particularly when she's doing it for the good of society as a whole, or anyway her own comrades. Which, in this world, might as well be the same thing. And a broken arm isn't the worst thing she could have suffered, particularly out there on the ice, either!
They both look fantastic, and the medical car looks pretty well stocked, particularly for being in the middle of a frozen apocalyptic wasteland. I like the frozen cityscape speeding by the window, showing us just what they're up against, at least in broad terms, and there are so many lovely details in the scene as well.
And you know I've always gotta cheer for my fellow lagomorphs!

My idea had been her just treating an injury (a fairly common thing on the train), but when I saw the sketch the exchange just popped into my head along with the reply, and so I used it instead of a more serious description. :)
Given all that I put them through it's impressive most of them don't get killed. But that plot armor does come in handy. ;)
The canon is that the train had the benefit of being onf ot he few places to be prepared for the disaster (due to reasons you'll know in the prequel) so they carried a lot of supplies to their base, and in turn were in a far better position than most to recover. And in addition, thanks to more things I can't talk about, their general nature could have been far different. But it just goes to show that small things do sometimes make a huge difference.
And I wanted something out the window to show clearly this wasn't just a winter train ride, and the cityscape seemed like a good idea, at least I think I had suggested it to the artist.
After I decided on Joe being a polar bear, I knew his co star had to be female and something cold tolerant, so I settled on a female snowshoe hare. You don't see enough of them as action heroes, and we also need to distinguish that rabbits are hares are different variations (although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably.)
