I don't know if undergoing heat stroke at 59 degrees is considered an upgrade..._______________________________________________________________________Despite the sheer amount of spacefaring species walking around, space travel is still as financially destabilizing and difficult to even approach for nearly everyone. Be it otherworldly entities whose biology defies the natural order (oh wait, that's just furries as a whole) or spacefarers and explorers, the confines of planet Earth still bind the vast majority of the population.
This is a conundrum Shard and his associates were actively trying to change.
A certain small group of a spacefaring species, the avali, had taken note of the rest of the populous' awe towards their efforts, and decided to auction off some of their lesser used gizmos and gadgets to the highest bidder, taking advantage of the overwhelming fascination this less- advanced civilization seemed to have towards their tech. Among said group was Shard, and some of his associates. They had ultimately failed in securing most of what was offered, however what they did end up walking away with was a remarkable, previously used avali holographic HUD. "Previously used" is the key wording here- as they didn't care too much about the functionality of the object, but rather the fact they had retrieved some very small stray tufts of fur and feathers from it. And what do shady, secretive and deceptively powerful facilities do with pieces of retrieved hair? Why, draw out the DNA and experiment on it, of course!
Now granted, the sample obtained was just one of many steps towards the results Shard was hoping for. Trying to transmogrify someone into something of such a unique species and biology was definitely far more difficult than was anticipated. Thankfully, the nanite system used to clean up Abber's containment escapades also works as a reset button for each failed transformation attempt- which, there was a lot of. But eventually, after months of constant work, experimentation, and failure, they had succeeded... only to discover that the species mostly relied on swapping in and out specialized augments to counteract some of their alleged weaknesses.
Welp, back to the auction. Still utterly adorable, though._______________________________________________________________________
