After last year's resurgence of art carried into this year, and having missed out entirely on something for June, I made it my goal this year to complete something for every month of the year, and I'm so pleased to share this: every month had at least one picture completed in it! Not only that, but I'm so incredibly proud of some of the quality I've achieved, this was some of my biggest projects to date, and so many of them I was so happy to have made.
2021 didn't feel like the most active year in terms of art, I still believe 2010 holds the record for most new drawings, but in terms of files in the folder, 2021 has the most art files in it, a result of me saving elements of a project separately. Part of this folder was a project I hadn't finished yet, but once all the files had been created, it would've doubled what 2020 had and then some. I made a lot of art this year regardless, and I'm so very happy to share it with you all this year!
January
🥚 A Little [Dough]Ball of Dot 🥚
Completed & Uploaded on January 20As I've said a number of times in the past, Dot is the perfect character to make quick pictures with. His simple body shape makes him the go-to for something easy, and he actually got it twice in January. Looking at them both again, I felt that Thinking Dot was a little better, but choosing Dot as a ball was kind of the start of putting a little more effort into my art, what with settings and backgrounds that would eventually come later.
A runner-up in Januray would've been JanCHUary | Mousey Disc, but I felt the quality of it was rough and the way I had put it together could've been better. I feel like for my transformation/squishing art, that's something I could learn to get better at, adding more details to show better compression and shape.
February
🔒 Jar of Doughshi 🔓
Completed & Uploaded on February 1This was my first big project of the year, and I didn't actually intend for it to be that way! And looking back on some of the details I added in my later drawings this year, it's kinda lessened its value with me, just a tad. But I really enjoyed putting this one together. I made an attempt at shading and lighting in a curved container, to make it look a little more 3D.
March
🎈 April 7, 2021 🎈
Completed on March 24
Uploaded on April 7This one requires a bit of explanation. As I shared in the original description, I had the idea for a huge birthday picture celebrating my friends. To ensure that I completed in time, I had sketched it out earlier in the month and completed it near the end of the month as well. I just let it wait until April to finally upload it on my birthday, which is why it sits in March. It made me happy that, despite having such small images in the grander scheme of things, I could include some of my closest friends, including @SDragon01, @LilArrin, @Ryex-617/@CelestialReptile1989/@OKay1989/@DeltaSmasher89, @AcetheGolden, and Darenkoopa with parapetch on Twitter. I wanted to do more, and I would love to make an even bigger picture sometime in the future to top this, where I can include more friends who deserve the recognition for being such wonderful people.
March, I feel was one of my best months in terms of art this year. I made a new character reference for Simon plus three large projects that month: Round Trip and Pink-Ponk, and them with my birthday picture made for some of my favorite pieces this year.
April
🐢 Doughshi's Koopa Troopa Form 🐢
Completed & Uploaded on April 13I remember exactly how I felt about doing this one: I pulled out a piece of paper to sketch out a Koopa form for myself, but as I was drawing it, it was coming out so clean and good-looking that I was very much driven to complete it. I was very proud of how it came out, I thought it was so cute and perfect that I completed it next day. It would also be retrofitted and used as a base for standard Koopa Troopas to be used in that unfinished project I mentioned.
May
🦖 Plum Tyrannosaurus-Rex 🦖
Completed & Uploaded on May 5This was the first picture I finished that was sketched on my iPad Pro! I had invested in one back in February, along with the Apple Pencil that arrived in the middle of April. However, I wouldn't be able to use it until a couple days later until a screen protector arrived and was applied to the tablet; I refused to use the Apple Pencil on the bare screen without some form of protection, I didn't want to scratch it up.
May is when I introduced Plum to the cast, who immediately became one of my personal favorite characters that I've created. His conception outlives my time as an artist, having daydreams of scenarios and fictional scenes while I was at school or on the road listening to music. Of course, Plum wasn't designed or created like this back then, but the idea of a Rex character is older than Kye, my first fan character. Additionally, I was very proud of how this picture came out, I recall how challenging it was for me to position and size everything correctly to be in a wheelchair. But iPad Pro and the tools in Sketchbook made that super easy. It's a game-changer when it comes to physically sketching something out, turning a layer on and off, and finely detailing this or that in a way that paper and pencil never gave me. Plum's creation is something I will treasure as an artist and as a Nintendo fan, because he has, in some form or fashion, lived with me for at least 10+ years.
June
🌸 Kinamona 🌸
Completed & Uploaded on June 8Looking at what I uploaded this month, I was a little surprised that I chose this one. Between this, A Nerd, and A Bigger Nerd, and Pride, I felt like this wasn't as grand as the others, but what I remembered as to why I chose it was that it was full-body, not a transformation, and a new outfit, and I felt really proud about that. Still, I probably would've put Pride in this place, as that was a very large and wonderful project to work on, and the significance of coming out and sharing your identity with the world is an otherworldly feeling.
July
🏖 Beach Day 🏝
Completed on July 8
Uploaded on July 9This was my next huge project, and once again something I really loved spending time on. It was working with a new dynamic pose and a new outfit for Doughshi. It also came at a time where I wanted to make more pieces that I could use as desktop backgrounds, and this was perfect to set up. I made multiple versions of this one, I had alot of fun with it. It also gave me the opportunity to make another picture with Cinnamon in it, who I was really enjoying drawing during the summer.
August
🔴 Friends 🔴
Completed on August 31
Uploaded on September 1This was perhaps my favorite piece of the entire year. Created to celebrate both @SDragon01's and @LilArrin's birthdays that month, I wanted something dedicated to the three of us. These two have been apart of my life for so long now and have been with me for so much: getting my Eagle Scout award, graduating high school, getting my first (and current) job, the passing of my Dad, so on and so forth. They mean the world to me and I wanted this to be something that shows how much I love and care about them and the friendship we all share.

🍌 Super Doughshi Ball 🍌
Completed on September 18
Uploaded on September 24This passion piece was used to commemorate the release of Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania, the 20th anniversary remake of the original three games, except instead of putting Doughshi in a ball, he is the ball! The Super Monkey Ball series is one of my all-time favorite franchises and the first two games on GameCube are extremely fun games to play even today, and over the past five years have spawned a modding community that breathes new life into Super Monkey Ball 2 through custom level packs. I love this series and I hope one day, if you haven't already, you get the chance to experience it yourself.
This was also around the time I had begun using the mirroring tool inside of Sketchbook to make more what I like to call centered pieces, which most of them turn out to be front-facing shots. It was alot of fun to do, as drawing was now made easier to match what I was doing on the left was copied to the right. When I colored it, what I put on the left could then be copied in a new layer and then flipped. Now everything was perfectly even.
October
👻 All That's Left 👻
Completed on October 22
Uploaded on October 28I was finally in a position to make something proper for Halloween, but as I said originally, I wouldn't say this is Halloween material. Rather, I used this opportunity to draw Plum again and share a part of his backstory: the loss of his father and a seemingly broken promise. Once again, I primarily used the mirroring tool to make this, and this was also very difficult to do thanks to how I wanted to draw Plum's body and how to position his legs.
Sadly, this was also the first time I neglected to double-check my files to make sure the primary .pdn file had saved, so I lost that after I had saved all of the other elements individually. If anything, I am glad that everything was individually saved, so I could just open those files after the fact and place everything for the final piece.
November
🐮 Doughshi's Miltank Form 🐮
Completed & Uploaded on November 2Now this one was kinda random, but as I said in the original upload, CrizBN had created a picture near the end of October of a Miltank trap. His style had really grown on me throughout the past few months, so when I saw that, I had this sudden desire to draw a Miltank form for Doughshi. I remember taking a few tries to get the proportions and positioning right, like the hair and the ears, but I'm super happy with the end result. I think it looks super cute!
December
🎁 Ready for Christmas, I Think 🎁
Completed on December 16
Uploaded on December 25Finally, we come to the end of the year. I remember having to fight myself to draw something up as I hadn't sketched anything since the beginning of November, so I had to scramble to make something in time for the holidays, and I didn't want to make Plopped Dot be my representation for December or my last new art piece for the year. in the end, I think it came out alright, but I was kinda moving quickly to make this happen. I had only two other days off before Christmas that I could use for art, and it had been getting late. Still, I was glad I was able to make something regardless.
So there you have it! That is my rundown of art in 2021! I'm so happy and proud of what I've made this year, it's been a lot of fun to make things and I hope I can continue that momentum into 2022. If there's anything I'd like to learn this year in terms of art, I want to learn how to do more expressions, the aforementioned detailing during transformations, and coloring on my iPad. I've used my computer for coloring for more than a decade now that it's time that I put some more effort into making just my iPad my art machine, and see where it takes me. Art continues to be my hobby, but if this year was any indication, I have fun doing it, and I'm very happy of the things I've learned how to draw or try to draw. It takes me out of my comfort zone of drawing just Yoshis and trying new body types.
Thanks for looking and reading! Have a wonderful rest of your evening, and enjoy 2022! 🎆
