Umm... Actually, it is relatively easy. If you have the better half of a brain and the capability of recognizing cognates, you could probably pick up half the words within two years. Now, learning how to put it together? You'll need actual instructions for that. And I assure you, the word combination commonly called 'forming contractions' is covered in the first year of tutelage, and reviewed over for a short while in the second year.
The odd thing is, there's a native French speaker taking the class. And you'd expect her to ace the class.
She does not.

I figured as much would be true. Sorry if I'm coming on a little strong, for some reason I usually do. Whenever I do make comments I'm either about to pass out or just waking up.
Either way, French is not a hard language to learn. If you know Latin roots, and can recognize cognates, you're fine. [I think I'm repeating myself here...]
The harder languages to learn are ones that have no similarities at all to what you first learned. [Meaning, if you first learned a European language, you can more easily learn most other European languages. The tonal languages will be harder learn (Japanese, Chinese, etc.)]
And I think the only reason why the exchange student wasn't making a 100 was because she either didn't care to, or just didn't want to bother proving she could.
