Hopefully Japan will be able to recover quickly, though. And I'm sure they'll now be developing projects to help prevent another catastrophe like this happening too often.
Look at how they have battled earthquakes since Kobe.
I don't believe in any gods, but I'm still praying for everyone affected.

It's scary. Imagine a regular day where you are working at an office or school, and the whole place shakes, sending tables, chairs, computers flying everywhere. Really frightening.
Japan is well off in terms of development, I'm sure they will pick themselves up and continue unfazed by this setback.

The office scenario, fine. Most of the buildings are designed to stand up to that. It's the 10 metre wall of water that is the issue. You can't escape it, you can't outrun it and you probably can't survive it. The area you live in is too flat to find a high place, and all the buildings tall enough to avoid the water will probably collapse under the force of the impact.
It was scary watching what looked like a giant ooze monster swallowing up the land. I used to live on an Island, and massive weather hitting was not fun. I am inland now.
Waiting for a friend from Tokyo to post something online, as I'm not sure how to get a hold of him. :(

My prayers and sympathies go out to Japan! This hit me pretty hard emotionally as I have many friends in Japan. Thankfully most of the ones I know are safe. They live around tokyo and south of there. Still my heart breaks from the losses experienced by those up north. My best friend is due to marry his fiancé this year who is from Japan, I am concerned for his safety as well as he plans to travel to Japan soon.
It was so frightening and fascinating to watch the destruction take place on the news footage, but I agree. Seeing the images over and over again made the situation all the more depressing. My friend Carol loves those old "Giant Monster" movies from Japan, and now to me, they just don't seem as "Fun" as they were any more. Japan Will recover I'm sure, but I wonder about things here in California.
I remember seeing Sendai at night while flying over the city on a trans-pacific flight, it looked so pretty, none of the people living there deserved this crap. The fact that Japan was well prepared for a catastrophic earthquake probably saved countless lives though, most of the houses seemed to have survived the quake itself and the advanced warning system really kicked in. What really moved me was how calm and rational everyone's attitude was over there in wake of such a disaster, and to be honest I can't really see any other country pull that off. The news demonstrated such professionalism, delivering the most important and urgent news in a calm voice even though you could hear some of the anchor's voices shaking a bit, and they did all that had to be done to avoid spreading unnecessary panic. I've been living on the rim of fire almost all my life and I remember some of the huge ass quakes that I've been through, they still make me a bit paranoid though. Thoughts to all those involved in Japan, Christchurch, and Yunnan.... stay strong!
