Character
Jenifer was always a thrillseeker. She was hardly ever scared of anything, even when the streets in her Brazilian neighbourhood she grew up in had a reputation of having rampant gang violence. She has always been a survivor, and was quite skilled in parkour. But Jenifer wasn't the kind of type that wants to go on adventures alone. She greatly values others, and she always dreamed of having a job where she could help other people, mainly being a firefighter. When the Terran Starfleet was looking for dedicated rescue servants on their ships, she immediately signed onto the training programme, and was assigned to the Pioneer after training had completed. She also had a passion for acting in her free time, and loves to dive into a role on stage.
During her time on the ship, she has extinguished a few fires and carried wounded people away to sick bay. But when she was deployed on a rescue mission on Starbase 1-F8, disaster struck: while evacuating a station compartment from an unstable source of arcane energy, she was exposed by a huge surge of arcane energy. Her body fell limp on the floor, but her "soul" (for the lack of a better word) was thrown meters back outside of her body. She was horrified seeing her own body lying there and came to the shocking conclusion she was a ghost. She tried to pick up her body in this form, and although at first she just phased through it, she found that with enough willpower, she could manipulate her surroundings and was able to drag her body away. A few of her colleagues were in shock when they found her in this state after she screamed for help, and carried her body to sickbay.
The doctor managed to revive her body, but her soul didn't return to it, leaving it in a vegetative state: all body functions were working, but their mind was empty. At first she mourned, as she thought it was all for nothing, but then thought to return to her body herself. She discovers she can possess bodies. The doctor was surprised to see her fully functioning again (albeit with glowing blue eyes), even though the brain scans show no signs of any thoughts. By possessing her own body, she can try to live as a normal person, with all the feelings and experiences that would offer. However, her ghost is unable to get mentally exhausted and is unable to sleep. At night, where she has to lay her body to rest, she leaves her body behind and wanders around the ship. Flying through the ship and phasing through walls, and entering areas that would be deadly for any living being is a fun thrill ride for her, but the loneliness at night is making her long for the time where she was still a normally living rat. In these times, she regularly gets company by Holly, the only other person on the ship who has some understanding for he predicament.
Becoming a ghost wasn't holding her back from her duties. In fact, in some cases it has proven to be quite helpful. She can possess any body as long as the mind of the host doesn't resist (she usually asks for consent if the person is still conscious). When she finds unconscious people in danger, she can temporary possess their body trying to get them on their own out of harm's way. Yet, this possessing, although helpful, feels like a necessary evil to her to take away someone's agency, and she doesn't like doing it. She feels terribly sorry when people get scared of her ghostly appearance. Even though she can literally be in anyone's skin, she's more comfortable when she pretends to do so on stage. And even though she may be "half-undead", she keeps on trying her best to save people wherever she can for suffering the same fate as her. Most of the crew calls her the Pioneer's Guardian Angel, a title she wears with pride.

So, the Pioneer is haunted... kinda. A very fitting entry for Spooktober. I have more in store this month.
