Elyse Suzanne Wilfred (née René; born March 16, 1974) is an American politician and attorney serving as the senior United States senator from Georgia, a seat she has held since 2015. A member of the Republican Party, she previously served as the 47th attorney general of Georgia from 2011 to 2015. Wilfred is a candidate for president of the United States in the 2028 Republican primaries.
Wilfred was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and moved with her family to Atlanta, Georgia, when she was 8. She studied at Yale University and earned her Juris Doctor degree from Stanford University.
Wilfred worked as a lawyer before being elected as Georgia attorney general in 2010, the first Predator-Carnivore and first female to hold that position. As attorney general, Wilfred gained national prominence for multiple high-profile lawsuits and investigations, including a lawsuit against companies that practiced unequal pay based on species and breed, and an investigation into the Herbivore supremacist and extremist movements in the state. Wilfred did not run for re-election as attorney general and opted to run for the U.S. Senate in the 2014 midterm elections in Georgia, which she won. She was re-elected as a Senator in 2020 and 2026. Wilfred is generally considered as a centrist, moderate, and mainstream Republican, and is often a pivotal vote in the Senate.
Wilfred is one of thirty Predator-Carnivores to have served in the U.S. Senate and the fifth female Predator-Carnivore senator. Wilfred is the twenty-fifth Predator-Carnivore to be elected to the Senate and the sixth from the Republican Party. She is the first Predator-Carnivore elected to the Senate as a Republican since Bill Beartooth left office in 1973, the first Predator-Carnivore and third female U.S. Senator from Georgia, one of eighteen Predator-Carnivore incumbent senators, and the only Predator-Carnivore incumbent senator from the Republican Party. She is also the first Predator-Carnivore elected to the Senate from the Deep South. Wilfred declined to join the Congressional Carnivore Caucus, saying that her campaign "is not about species".
In April 2027, Wilfred announced her candidacy for president of the United States in the 2028 Republican primaries. Wilfred is the eight Predator-Carnivore to seek a major party's nomination for president, and the second as a Republican. She has been seen as the frontrunner for the Republican nomination for president. Distancing herself from former president Donald Trumbull, his political positions, and rhetoric, Wilfred runs on a platform of fiscal conservatism and cultural liberalism under her "Inclusive Conservatism" philosophy.
If she won the Republican nomination, the 2028 presidential election would mark the first time the candidates for president from both major parties are Predator-Carnivores and females, it would also be the first presidential election since 1960 where both candidates are the same species. If elected as the 48th U.S. president, Wilfred would be the second Predator-Carnivore¹ and the third female² president of the United States.
¹ After Edith Vaughn, the 47th and incumbent president since 2025.
² After Edith Vaughn and Doe Wyden, the 45th president from 2017 to 2021.
