Prompt: disclose
Jeff and his dinner guest both looked up as the waiter approached with their entrees, and the gray tabby feline smiled at the sight and scent of his stuffed flounder. The waiter then set the second plate down before Jeff’s dinner guest, a tall Doberman.
The canine sniffed at his steak. “I didn’t order this.”
The waiter frowned. “You ordered steak, sir.”
“It’s underdone.”
“You told me what you wanted,” the waiter said, “not how you wanted it cooked. The chef did his best.”
“I was uncertain,” the Doberman said. He shrugged.
“I could take it back and have the chef put it on the grill for a little longer – “
“Never mind, it’s not raw. I’ll eat it.” The waiter walked off, and the Doberman started to cut into his medium-rare steak. A thin rivulet of juice crept toward his mashed potatoes.
“So,” Jeff said after sampling his flounder (which was delicious), “you said that you had something to tell me.”
“Mhm,” the canine said, chewing a bite of steak judiciously. He swallowed and reached for the pepper. “I have had . . . a revelation,” he said, sprinkling a dash of pepper on his steak and potatoes.
“A revelation?” Jeff asked. His fish was accompanied by a trio of silver dollar-sized potato pancakes, redolent of onion and garlic. They weren’t a patch on the crabmeat-stuffed entrée, but they were very tasty. “So don’t leave me in suspense. What is this revelation?”
“Well, it’s – “ The Doberman suddenly looked around to see that nearly everyone else in the restaurant had an ear cocked toward their conversation. “Stop that,” the canine snapped. “I’m not E.F. Hutton.” With a few muttered apologies, the other diners returned to their meals.
“Go on,” Jeff urged.
“Well, it’s like this. The more we learn, and the more we experience, one truth becomes abundantly clear,” the Doberman said around another bite of steak, “is that the only certainty we have is that we are uncertain.”
Jeff frowned. “Werner, really? We could have had pizza at my place, and you could have told me that.”
“I wasn’t certain about where would be the right place to tell you.”
Jeff made an irritated sound. “I am certain of one thing, though.”
“Oh?”
“You’re picking up the check.”
