The rifle Nur always carries around is a gift from his late father Rahan, who died in the same war in which Nur remained mutilated.
In Nur's society becoming a skilled warrior is pretty much expected, while someone who solely relies on firearm or other ranged weapons without practicing with any melee techniques is considered "dishonorable" and frowned upon. Despite these expectations, it was quickly clear that Nur absolutely sucked at hand-to-hand combat, and that he was way too scrawny to keep up with the training, leading to him being quite ostracized by his peers (with the exception of his twin brother).
Still, Nur was excellent at marksmanship, and his father recognized his talent. He pretty much ignored the opinion of the other warriors in the village, purchased for him a custom made rifle and encouraged him to practice and to never stop pursuing his goals. Nur did in fact become a fully fledged warrior, in the end, and this rifle remains his most prized possession.

Being a 'Southpaw,' I was taught to shoot 'Right handed' ('cause that's how Papa/nearly everyone else did it). While I CAN fire fairly well 'Lefty,' it just feels so damned strange!
That said, for folks who do? It's nice that many firearm platforms have the OPTION of left-handed operation/function(s)!

We were given no such gifts during Boot. All of us got the same, well-used M16A2's.
Things got really 'Fun' when you'd either be in the 'Sitting' or 'Prone,' on the firing line, and the hot brass just ejected by the Recruit to your left would neatly flip up and land either on the back of your neck, OR down the front of your blouse, singing your skin. During 'Live Fire' you couldn't (And for the few who DID, condolences for what the Range Sgt./D.I.'s did to 'em!) just reach up/down and take care of the 'Problem.' You had to endure it until 'Cease fire, cease fire!' was uttered, and THEN the damned thing(s) were welded to your hide!
Lovely times!
(Also, HOW in da heck are you finding these Posts, a YEAR later?! I did a double-take when I saw 'em, then chuckled as I refreshed my tired memory on the OP/Topic!)

In answer to your question, I was cleaning out my submissions list that I hadn't deleted and was looking at the interesting ones. Believe me when I say that some of the submissions are THREE years old. (I probably won't do more than look at those and either read them (the stories) or add them (the drawings) to my favorites. LOL)
I hope so. I'd love to find out why I am the way I am. Some people have told me to be careful and not close the wrong eye when I shoot a rifle. When they say that, I act like I'm preparing to fire a rifle and instinctively close my left eye. Then, I act like I'm about to shoot a pistol and I instinctively close my right eye. Just an oddball, I guess. LOL
I got and had fully restored, Papa's M1 Garand, that he carried during his Tour(s) in 'Nam. (Yes, yes, he DID also have the venerable M4 and then M16, but preferred the Garand's .30-.06 caliber and reliability)
I began learning how to shoot at four (Yes, '4') years of age, and haven't stopped, now that I'm hitting '60.'
I still remember (But sadly, do NOT still have it), the first rifle he gave me. A Winchester pump action in .22LR. I was so proud... (And he was, too!).
Amazing how art can transport ya back in time to a specific event...
Wow...

I like that you combined the two differing features. Not only does it show your knowledge in this, but also the latitude you have in your stories! After all, there's no reason in the world the wheel lock AND that particular rifle/platform, couldn't have co-existed (They're mutually invented devices that don't break any technological or even time constraints IRL).
Well done!
Well done!
Well, that's not being particularly fair, even trying to level the Field of Combat in a 'Fair' way.
Say you're injured, or old/frail/whatever? You'd be a fool to try and stay close, much less get into any CQC engagement with a superior opponent.
What if said enemy outnumbers ya, and are literally the 'Bad guys/Invaders,' and you're only trying to protect and defend yourself, your family/friends/fellow citizens?
As a woman, who then became a Marine, I have studied/trained to learn as many styles of fighting as I could, including the up-close-and-dirty, and the long-range variants. Even knowing what I know, and EDC'ing what I do, I STILL don't want to get hands-on vs anyone, if I have a choice in the matter.
It's utter hubris and 'Hollywood' to believe a 'Fair fight' exists on the streets/in combat. I have zero compassion/empathy towards the criminal/homicidal elements of the world (Or in Fiction), and wouldn't hesitate to use every dirty trick in any book to put an end to them/their antics.
Not criticizing ya, merely offering my .02.

Well, thanks for offering your advice on fair fight or the lack there of in the real world. Though even across history they're lot of examples of not fair fights being won, like the fact that du Guesclin almost took back all that the English lands in France during the hundred years war because he avoided actual battles and didn't thought knightly.. So yeah, even in the supposed times of chivalry it was already dead anyway.
There's 'Tactics' to avoid being forced into an engagement, and then there's the 'No-holds-barred,' hand-to-hand trench melees.
Experienced/Wise military Commanders/Leaders know how to minimize the danger to their troops/themselves, while maximizing the damage done to the enemy.
I was referring primarily to person-to-person melee engagements, and how 'I' never enter (or am set-upon) one with the intent of fighting 'Fair.'
I'm fighting to end the threat(s) against me/mine, and I'm going to be as utterly dirty and devastating as I can be in the accomplishment of it.
That's just me.
Now, if yer out for a rowdy 'Thumb-wrastlin' Contest,' I'll promise to leave my blades/ordinance outta that!

Found a historical example of a left handed weapon like Nur's prize possession. https://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/.....8-jpeg.213867/ The barrel is pointing to the left - muzzle is off the screen. Optimized for someone left handed and firing from the left shoulder or at least aiming with the left eye. Nur would love to have that one for his collection.
Right handed wheel lock for comparison https://worcester.emuseum.com/inter...../35810/preview Circa 1590 - made for the personal guard of the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg Firing mechanism is on the right side of the weapon - set up for a right hander. Firing mechanism is similar to what you find on a cigarette lighter, spin a grooved wheel against a piece of Iron Pyrite to make sparks to ignite the gunpowder in a small metal pan next to the barrel. A small hole in the barrel channels the flame into the main powder charge, igniting it and sending the bullet down the barrel at high speed.

This explains the attitude of Old Grumpy Cat from https://www.furaffinity.net/view/44078434/ a bit better.
That would mean a lot to Nur!
I bought my first firearm, a .22 rifle, when I was 20 but still living at home. There was only one gun in the house, Dad's war trophy Walther P38. My mother hated guns (although she used to hunt for the pot in her youth). After I moved out Dad called me with a problem: woodchucks were destroying his garden. Next Sunday while Mom was at church I solved Dad's problem.
