'Twas simpler times in Mewni, if one asked the knight Oersted. A far cry from the land of Lucrece. No Lord of Dark, no friends false, no painful heartbreak or an absence of faith. True, there was still the conflict between hu-- er, mewmans and monsters, but thanks to his friend Set and the fair queen Eclipsa Butterfly, Oersted had at least a good understanding of what was going on to at least live easily in this new land and serve his new queen with the only ally from his world that remained by his side.
Oersted had no illusions about what he felt about her majesty. True, she was beautiful, understanding, and had faith in him, but at the same time, she wasn't easily fooled like... her. Nay, she was just and good. A woman who saw good even in monsters, who acted as humans did as well. A woman whom he could have seen as, perhaps, his second chance at love requited...
But he dismissed that thought. That was not fair to Eclipsa, the second person to have brought him back from the depths of despair. She deserved better than to have him treat her like a rebound after his experience with... her. Besides, he knew better than to expect her to love him as more than a friend. Her heart already belonged to another. Globgor. A monster with a pure heart.
Oersted cherished the friendships he made in Mewni. Ones that would not fall like back in Lucrece. He was thankful to Eclipsa for allowing him to be by her side as a friend. Thankful to Globgor for being a better man than most of the humans and even Mewmans he had met. He--
"Oersted, you're staring into space again."
"Er, w-what? Beg pardon?"
Oersted snapped out of his reverie, remembering where he was. The royal gardens, where Queen Eclipsa herself was watering them as he kept her company. She was giving him a teasing look as he sheepishly cleared his throat and stood at attention.
"Er, my apologies, your highness." he apologized to her.
"Come now, Oersted, I told you before." She told him. "We're friends, so you can call me Eclipsa, or 'clipsy if you so desire."
"Erm, aye, understood, your hi-- ahem, Eclipsa."
She giggled a bit more, having gotten used to how rigid Oersted could be around her. You could help bring the man in the knight out but you can't take the knight out of the man, she supposed. As for said knight, he felt silly, getting into memories when he was to keep his queen company while she worked. What good friend did that?
"Oersted," he heard her begin as she began watering the next bush of flowers, "how do you like being here in Mewni?"
"What dost thou ask?" he asked back, curious as to what brought this on.
"Well, you've certainly adjusted to living here with ease and you take your role as knight seriously. Some of the other knights are even whispering you might even take position as their commander one day." She told him. "Of course, I think some are just a bit envious about how you know your way around a sword.
"But at the same time, you have seen how unfortunate our state of politics is at the moment." She continued, a slight frown forming on her purple lips. "Coming from a land where monsters unfortunately do not have the same sentience and intelligence as those who live here, your understanding of Globgor relieves me, yet my people unfortunately have yet to accept them with the same ease. Sufficed to say, we're hardly as perfect as how you described your Lucrece."
Oersted also didn't tell her about how it was Lucrece that broke him down. Best she knew it at its best, he believed.
"Anyhow, seeing Mewni, a land in an unnecessary war, and comparing it to Lucrece, where peace has long reigned, do you truly prefer it here?" She asked. "I do not want you to think that Set, nor myself, are forcing you to be here from your home so you could feel comfortable. I--"
"I do prefer living here, Eclipsa." He stated, though he apologized quietly for cutting her off.
He continued as he approached her, a fist to his breastplate, "Queen Eclipsa Butterfly, 'twas in great despair that I was falling down before Set saved me from hatred's drought. 'Tis you that placed faith in me, despite my anonymity in your lands, when none in Lucrece had faith left. True, this land may be plagued by a war ruled by prejudice, but even a land of peace such as Lucrece was not without its flaws. Superstition ruled their minds, prone to rash judgments they were. Anyone they had no use for, even their former heroes, would be thrown away. Just as myself.
"But here, thanks to Set, thanks to thee, I have friends true, faith in abundance." He told her. "I am grateful eternally for thy goodwill, your majesty. I am honored to be thy knight, and to have Mewni as my home."
Eclipsa smiled, to which Oersted smiled back. It felt good to see his queen happy. To have everything be right with the world, even with a few hiccups here and there. Yes, he truly was grateful to his friends.
"That's good to hear, Oersted. I'm glad to have your friendship too." She told him.
Yes. Friendship with someone who trusted in earnest. Better than a rushed love or a marriage with someone whose faith was fleeting. Oersted was happy.
...If only things could have stayed that way.
Woah, wall of text, much? Well, as you might imagine, this is a flashback in the Thiccverse Beyond AU of mine, featuring Eclipsa Butterfly and Oersted from Live A Live, a Square Enix game that came out on the SNES only in Japan but recently got a remake for the Switch and other consoles. Great game, by the by. Very well worth supporting it (on PS4/5 apparently) so we can try getting a sequel (shamelessplugisshameless). Thanks again to Chillguydraws for making this pic and to
cosmicdataworld for giving it life with colors and shades!
