That was the problem with early automobiles. You figure at that time, most traffic was by horse, and vehicles were wood held together by bits of metal. Paved roads were the exception and not the rule. Especially connecting towns! This had been going on for a millennia. While not a complete tetanus trap, there is a reason many early cars carried multiple spare tires...
In my canon here, I imagine they have a sort of magic / electric system. Some storage cell is charged by unicorn magic and acts like a battery from there. Although for practicality other pony magic will need to be harnessed by some means. Electric systems can be very torquey, and extremely simple to maintain! =^^=
Historically, early cars would actually carry a reasonably well stocked tool chest in the trunk. Knowing how to drive entailed knowing how to do field repairs! But first gen cars like the Modle T were stupidly simple. Spark plug wires could be a flat strap of copper! The fuel system was literally gravity fed on top of the motor!

I am taking a few liberties here... If you do a little research first generation autos had that problem. Rubber compounds weren't that advanced. Paved roads were the exception, not the rule. And 1000 years of traffic from wooden vehicles held together by nails left a ready bed of road hazards for early cars! That is why most classic cars sported more than one spare tire. They weren't there for show! =^^=
You might say this is the first improvement from her first set. Natural rubber is a white / tan color. It degrades in sunlight! Carbon has been added to the tread area on these tires, which will make them last longer before dry rot claims them!
(But driving over 1000+years of horse traffic, and old wood carts held together by odd metal bits is going to take its toll! =^^= )
