I recently had the opportunity to read an “updated” history textbook that was published in Russia. complete propaganda. and it seems that “great” Poland is also had such conceit to bragg too much, forgetting that the leading power was the Principality of Lithuania and Russ. The ancestors of today's Ukrainians were then called Russian, or more correctly Rusíni.
Poland much like other nations in Europe, had it's golden age in shape of Commonwealth of both nations (Which in English is called Polish-Lithuanian, needlessly in my opinion pointing it out.) While I have never denied importance of Lithuania in union, the fact itself that Lithuania has never been a kingdom is already putting stronger leverage on Polish diplomacy seeing the day and age and how they looked at it (depending on period too, after all, that will be centuries to discuss.) Not to mention the development of area as well as simple population difference. And of course, Muscovy being one of reasons why Union of Lublin even came to existance.
It is estimated that from XVI to XVII century, population in Commonwealth was estimated to be 4.5m Poles, 0.75m Lithuanians, 0.7m Jews and 2m Ruthenians. As you can see, just by sheer numbers, Poles were the leading power (even i agree, it was not very fair towards others in union) not including the aforementioned development of states. Even the whole infamous polonization of Lithuania was even started by Lithuanians when Jogaila took the offered crown of Poland. Mind you that Polish language as well as them being closest to west for Muscovy (and later Tsardom) thus, it became fashionable in higher circles of Kremlin in second half of XVII century.
However, do I say that Poles were sole reason why Commonwealth was strong? Absolutely not. Such arrogance and rampant corruption eventually lead to our own demise. It is a bizarre union which somehow managed to exist despite it's ridiculous system. Yet every golden age comes to an end finally. Without others? Commonwealth would never exist.
However, for each good thing I have to say about it? I have two bad ones. After all, history will be there wheter we like it or not. So for everything I said? There is can of worms to contradict it. After all, if we would be so great, we would not sell nation away ;p
p.s - Oh boy, a Ruthuenia, Borderlands, Belarus and Rus... That is another massive topic on it's own. However a topic I am willing to discuss as I pretty much live for history. If you are willing, we can continue in notes.
