"WATCH OUT! Coming through!" Speeding through a crowd of some unsuspecting pedestrians, Whisper glanced back, trying her best to apologetically wave at them before reverting her attention back in front of her-
In her defense, she had only been riding for...a few days.
She was oddly impressed with herself that she had not gotten into an accident [yet], and was able to balance! Then again, it was like riding a bike: it quickly came to her once she hopped on her board and learned how to balance herself. As to why her grown ass was on a skateboard-
Boredom. Pure boredom.
While she was jogging at the park last weekend, she saw some kids, maybe in their teens, early 20s, skateboarding and rollerblading. It brought back memories of her youth and how she never got to do things like that...she was a chubby little lyolf growing up that was far from athletic or active in terms of playing outdoors much.
But now that she was older, in better shape, and enjoyed being active and outdoors, the idea of learning to skateboard piqued her interest. She watched the kids do tricks and aimlessly wheel around the park, her pace slowing down to watch them and their antics.
On a whim, Whisper decided to stop by the local sporting goods store after her jog to look at skateboards: JUST LOOK. Not buy one.
...
An hour later, she found herself with a new board, helmet, and some knee and elbow pads as a precaution.
What?!
In her defense, she had made more spontaneous purchases before; this was one of the more tamer ones. She figured it was worth a shot. It did seem like fun.
She spent the rest of the day on Pawtube looking at beginner's skateboarding videos, tricks and techniques, as she took notes and practiced standing and balancing in the safety of her backyard, and rolling up and down the sidewalk. Did she feel silly? Yes. Was she having fun? Absolutely.
The following weekend, she found herself skateboarding through downtown Kyoto! Even agreeing to meet up with some of her friends for a lunch date- their mouths dropped as they saw Whisper flying by on the board, somehow managing to even catch some air.
"As if risking her life hunting down people isn't enough of a "thrill" for her, now she wants to do skateboarding?! This woman..." Amelia muttered to herself as she waved Whisper over.
The next day, Whisper woke up achy and sore all over. Needless to say, she's getting too old to skateboard, LOL. But you are only as old as you feel right? Right.
What happens when a lyolf learns to skateboard? Chaos.
In her defense, she -is- doing good for someone that's never ridden before; give her that much credit, lol.
I want to give a BIG thanks to the artist behind this piece: savrasova. She put so much time and effort into this piece, particularly the background and perspective-
Bonus points if you can identify all of the background characters (Hint: one of them belongs to the artist! Another character is mine, but she has no role in Whisper's universe...yet).

I tried skating around 25 years ago, never could ollie or go down a half pipe without crashing.. it was still all fun till my sisters BF let some other guy use it behind my back and intentionally trash my rare board.. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/295337688049924176/
personally I'm getting too old for things now.. used to be I could ride any theme park ride around and pretend to sleep during the pictures, now I go to a silly parking lot fair and my sister drags me on the ship that sways back and forth.. I don't know.. maybe seeing the guys finish putting the ride together 30 min. before I got on it didn't help but it scared the heck out of me.
It's nice to see some art of Whisper doing random things she normally wouldn't though.

Ooh, that's a sick board! You'd like one of my previous coworkers: he was a nurse that built, well customized his own skateboards- not sure if he rode much, but he liked to collect and tinker on boards for fun.
I definitely cannot ride anymore! I'm too old to fall and wind up in the ER breaking bones and limbs, LOL. I do want to do more "safer" hobbies like skating, bungee jumping, rock climbing...but skateboarding is a little out of my comfort zone- more like "fun to think about but will probably never do"
