200 years ago before the start of Octopath Traveler, Batan used to be your average everyday world with green trees and flowing rivers of water. But that all changed when Gess the Defiler rose to power with her armies launching a campaign of forced weight gain and gluttony. It would be thanks to Gess and after her death, Batan would be a world forever changed into one of gluttony.
For a brief bit of context, Batan, like many other worlds, are connected to other worlds through ancient Magitek constructs known as world gates. Every world was different in some way from technology, level of magic, and species. But one location interested Gess of all others for on a distant world lay the Great Everbounty Archipelago.
It was here, a land where rivers flowed of soda and trees grew fruits of meat, Gess sent many expeditions to gather and steal as many plants as possible. Her intention was believed to study and eventually use the food’s insanely delicious properties to make regular food extremely fattening to fatten the world. This would work but not in the way she liked.
When the heroes who slew her at the end of the war, known as the Ishigami Professionals, the godly energies that flowed in Gess ended up washing Batan all over. While this godly energy had no effect on the people of Batan, the same could not be said to the storages of food seeds stolen from the archipelago. And because Gess the Defiler was a god of gluttony and weight gain, the energy had a much BIGGER effect on the seeds which soon took root.
Within a year and a half, massive patches of food plants were discovered and within just 10 years, 98.98 percent of all Batans forests soon became a endless all you can eat (and naturally growing) buffet. Rivers and oceans following not long later.
Now in the year 175, Batan is now a world where a Glutton can eat his weight in fields of sausage and rivers of soda as well as fill up on endless adventure. And here is my adopted character Big Blue indulging on this endless amount of food no matter where he goes.
