For context, although there is no boat in the scene, that is what he is pulling. Kai on an island ledge gripping on to surface to pull in a boat.
Introduced by the pandas, it is a challenge the bears do just after fishing, to try to pull in the boat while those on it try to paddle the opposite direction,
just enough to give the puller a workout. There are also times multiple bears do this. The challenge ends when the pullers tap out, or reach the location
they are designated to pull the boat towards, whether on shore or their inland village via river connecting to the ocean.
At the moment, I'm kind of in an artist block, so I just pulled this from my unposted 2021 work and added some details.
In the real world, this was done inland beside a long river, but a dam was built, causing the river to rise, which also submerged the area.
From what I understand, the practice is basically dead.
