Both Izzy (the kitten) and Emi (my older cat) tend to shred theirs as they scratch. And play. And have their little kittytiffs. I did get Izzy a plastic-y looking one, and it's shiny with the holographic foil under the plastic, but I'm not sure how long it will last, and Emi's due for a new one.
And since they scratch at them, and pick it on one side more than the other, they soon manage to be able to de-collar themselves. (at least the quick releases work!)
Wonder if one of those bags of leather scraps from JoAnns would have something suitable...
