Maybe they moved on because making art they found meaningful made them too vulnerable. It hurt when people didn't understand. It made them feel alien and stupid, and they felt like everything inside them was just no good. Then they became a contrary, bitter creature that wasn't really who they were. And it was easy to stay that way because it made money.
Of course, this is all speculation. I wouldn't have any idea.
