It's the redraw of the frame you can see here: https://sta.sh/01ce03kdepmi (Fifi's tail was whole purple due to the gag in this episode, but I prefered to keep original design in my drawing).
Oh boy, it's been a long time since I drew this duo last time xD Also I worked on this pic mostly in September, but then laptop crash happened and didn't have much time to finish it till now.
"Tiny Toon Adventures" was one of my favourite cartoon shows in my childhood. It still takes a special place for me. So of course after the reboot news dropped in 2020, I was checking news with curiosity, but also concerns. And after knowing in which direction "Animaniacs" reboot went over next seasons and after hearing next rumors and leaks from "Tiny Toons Looniversity" in last 12 months, I had a very low expactations before premiere (tho to be fair, the theme song reveal gave me a bit of hope).
So, "Tiny Toons Looniversity" premiered last month and... it's fine. To be honest, after many rumors I was worried it will be a very bad show, but after first ten episodes being released, it looks okay.
Is it a great show? Nah, but to be honest, nobody expected that. Is it the best reboot? Nah, I still think "DuckTales" made much better job with their reboot than "Animaniacs" and "Tiny Toons" together.
One big difference between new versions of "Tiny Toons" and "Animaniacs" is a fact, that "TTL" creators decided to make a hard reboot, while "Animaniacs" couldn't decide if they are a reboot or more a revival and continuation of the old show. I feel "Tiny Toons" crew made a better decision with axing the connection between "TTA" and "TTL", making them two separated shows. What also keeps "Tiny Toon Adventures" from my childhood in their established bubble and nothing will change events or my impressions of that show.
The format also changed. I could say that if "Tiny Toon Adventures" are closer to the spirit of classic Looney Tunes shorts, then "Tiny Toons Looniversity" is closer to 2010's "The Looney Tunes Show". Every episode is half hour length and the show is focused more on the school life aspect. All characters are living in the campus now. The Looney Tunes characters show up in every episode (if I remember correctly). So far we didn't see too many locations outside of the Looniversity campus. There was no mention of Wackyland so far, but Gogo Dodo is one of students, so maybe we will go there in one of future episodes.
One of the results of format change is fact, that not really other characters outside of main five (Babs, Buster, Plucky, Hamton and Sweetie) get more time to shine. It's not like in "TTA", where we had episode only with Furrball shorts, Sweetie shorts (on her own demand lol ) or... ugh.. two unsuccessful backdoor pilots of Elmyra's own show. It's a bit shame, because I always loved more secondary characters over main heroes in this show (from main ones I always prefered Plucky and I keep this feeling in the reboot too). From 10 episodes we got so far, the most screentime got Shirley and Dizzy (who surpisingly has one of the best one-liners). Montana Max also got his time as a main villain in one episode. There was a bit of Fifi in a few episodes, and I guess that's all?
About Furrball - HE TALKS! TvT When I was a child it was one of my dreams. Like it could gave him more possibilities to interact with other students. Well, I guess technically he could speak, but outside of Star Trek parody short he said maybe 2-3 lines in the whole "Tiny Toon Adventures". So now my childhood wish has been granted. ...and so far nothing revolutionary happened, because he spoken in two episodes, where he was just a background character. His most prominent role so far was being a member of Buster's toony ball team together with Sweetie, Fifi and Lil' Beeper, but he didn't say any word in this episode (Fifi was quiet too. That was kinda weird choice. Maybe they saved money on episode's voice cast). I hope he will get more time to shine in some future episode, like Shirley, Dizzy or Montana already got.
Oh, and so far no sign of Elmyra in this reboot, after whole 10 episodes. Phew, what a relief for me xD Especially after her role was very overused with next seasons of original show, not mentioning "Pinky, Elmyra & the Brain". She quickly became very annoying. And yes, I am aware she appears in the opening credits, and that Cree Summer was confirmed to reprise her voice role as Elmyra. I just hope the crew has any idea for her character. If she will be a villain-like character, appearing only in one episode per season, I will be fine with that.
Okay, time for the elephant in the room. Buster and Babs are twins in this show. That reveal was the moment when internet's interest in the reboot dropped immediately. And I feel many "Tiny Toon Adventures" fans decided to boycott "Tiny Toons Looniversity" due to this drastic change. I watched these 10 episodes and... to be honest, I have no idea why the production crew decided to make this decision. xD The fact of bunnies being related is the main fuel for the story in first episode, as well as is important in episode featuring Lola Bunny. But outside of them... There is really no change except of one-two "bro/sis" lines in episode. Their dynamic is very similar to the original show (obviously except of removed some flirty stuff). So I really have no idea... Maybe the current production crew didn't want to have any romances in their show? Or they wanted to show more siblings dynamic (I guess that was their official reason in press release?). There is still at least 16 episodes supposed to release in the future, so we will see where it will go.
I guess the strongest side of the show at this moment are interactions between characters. Like the episode where Babs and Plucky had to work together to pass their anvil exams, that was really nice. The stories are mostly simple, but fine, like pizza party in the campus, the school newspaper, the theatrical performance of freshman year or the school prank wars (but now the enemy is Spongebob-like toon school. Does WB was too afraid they may be sued by Disney this time? Tho some Perfecto Prep students like Roderick are showing up as background characters during show run). There are also guest starrings of obscure Looney Tunes characters (of their offsprings), that may be unknown for casual viewers, but very well known by LT fans.
The design of characters is definitely more consistent in all episodes, not like in "TTA", where you could notice each studio produced this episode just by the look of characters. The animation has some good and bad moments, but doesn't have anything special in comparison to other 2020's shows. My small niptick all noticed during watching episodes - many times background characters just stay in the same and only one refsheet poses. That's lazy xD But that's something I noticed and many people may just don't catch.
There is also one episode with a brand new character, which is the gay (I guess?) raccoon named Renaldo. And he looks like someone's fan character that was added to the show. I mean, his design doesn't match too much with other Tiny Toons characters. For example, there is some new blue-ish dog student, that only appears in background so far and his design fits to the rest. So I dunno what happened here xD
Overall, "Tiny Toons Looniversity" is a fine show. For sure it's not the great one, but luckily is not as bad I was worried it will be. It was nice to see characters from my childhood again, tho in new realities. There is still 3 episodes of season 1 (if they weren't cancelled last minute) and all 13 episodes of season 2 supposed to release. I heard also rumors that two episodes are supposed to be holiday ones (Halloween and Christmas, I guess)? Andd for sure I will wait to see what's coming next. If there will be season 3? To be honest I don't know. And seeing how Zaslav axed many planned WB/Cartoon Network shows, I don't give huge hope we will see something beyond the season 2. So just enjoy the moment till it lasts.
Also drawing this picture gave me a lot of fun :D Maybe I should make fanarts more often.
