This one is chiefly inspired by the fact that the one real life ferret that I used to know used to sneak around in closets all the god damn time. At like 3 in the morning, sometimes. Scared the shit out of me every time it happened, I swear to god.
Lyna had a lot of time to herself over the last several days. She'd more than put it to good use, too. The Halloween decorations for the fast-approaching party were done, everything from little skeleton statues to banners to colorful accouterments dotted every inch of the tourism center. She even been given adequate time and silence to focus on carving her apple babies, and she was oh-so-close to perfection. All the same, too much time away from Sam made her lonely, very lonely, and she wanted him back. Problem being, he ought to be back by this point, so she'd have to go sniff him out.
She finished the baby she worked on at that moment, giving it a brief glance and a mildly approving, if still ultimately unsatisfied nod before she picked it up and headed into the back room. She paced quickly over to the closet tucked into the far corner of the room, a space cleared of clutter and boxes specifically for her to get in and out of here. Yet another baby to toss in the back, she had another purpose, this time around.
She didn't have time to walk all around town, so she'd have to employ another method to go rabbit hunting. It wasn't one she liked to employ too often, but she felt it necessary in this case. She took hold of the knob of the closet door and pulled it open. Instead of a cluttered, messy, packed closet, a cold, inky void replaced the storage space. She promptly tossed the baby inside, the effigy vanishing into the darkness soundlessly and without a further trace. Now, for her turn.
She didn't specifically know where Sam ran off to, she knew he was at Sajj's yesterday but for a brief errand, so figured he'd at least attempted to come back by now. While the shack was certainly an option to check, her mind turned elsewhere. It could be that Hannah decided to kidnap him again, to apologize for kidnapping him before and subjecting him to a life-threatening horror or two. In a similar vein, she wanted to give Hannah a scare as well, so to the farmhouse she decided.
She took a deep breath, holding it as she stepped slowly into the void. Barely perceptible, the darkness washed over her like a fine mist. A cool, hollow emptiness surrounded her as she entered the closet, and all sound and sight vanished from view. She shut the closet door behind her, sealing herself inside and submerging herself in total isolation. She opened her eyes. She stood small and insignificant in a vast expanse of nothingness, save, faintly, for the doorknob she'd used to usher herself in. It floated still and lonely in front of her. After a few moments passed, Lyna grasped the knob once more, fearing she'd lose herself to the tranquility of the near-total sensory deprivation.
She pushed open the door, and stepped through into Hannah's bedroom.
Lyna paused after making her presence frighteningly known, the wolf still sat curled up in bed in her pajamas. Hannah eyed Lyna with an equal mix of fear, surprise, and confusion. To Lyna's surprise as well, someone else was in the room with them. A spaniel woman in antiquated clothes stood in the far corner, floating in the air and perched such that she'd been looking down at Hannah. Her haunted gaze now turned towards Lyna.
“...What the frick?”, Hannah mumbled, wavering.
“Is Sam here?”, Lyna cut to the chase, “Or have you seen him?”
“No?”, Hannah answered, drawing her legs closer to her, “How did you get in here? This is my bedroom.”
“Eh, don't worry about it.”, Lyna hand-waved the question away before pointing up at the figure suspended in the air, “Uh... who's that?”
“That's Victoria.”, Hannah stated plainly and indicating she'd offer no additional explanation.
“Is she a ghost?”, Lyna pressed a little further as she and the definite ghost continued their staring contest.
“Yup.”, Hannah confirmed. Lyna pressed her hands together in sudden contemplation. She sharply exhaled, deep in rapid thoughts.
“Okay.”, she concluded, setting her hands back at her sides, “I love the dress. It's gothic, it's a lot, it's everything I want in a Halloween costume. Tell the ghost I'll be back because I got an idea for an outfit and I want to figure something out.”
“...I think she heard you, she can hear.”, Hannah whispered.
“Eh, you know what I mean.”, Lyna hand-waved that away too before stepping halfway back into the closet, “I mean it though, I'm coming back for a costume later.”
With that, she withdrew back into the darkness, leaving Hannah alone to process the visit she'd just paid her. Onto her next point of interest. If Sam wasn't at the farmhouse, and was being held against his will somewhere, she knew just where, and now was the perfect time to pay another visit.
She opened the door of the walk-in freezer, greeted by a thin cloud of steam and the aroma of cooking food as he stepped into Laurent's kitchen. A pot held at a low boil on the stove, but the line was otherwise unattended, the fox somewhere else, naturally. She left the closet door ajar and headed down the line towards Laurent's “Office”, promptly letting herself in without knocking.
The dimly let office went mostly unused, not a lot of actual work done in it. Mostly, Laurent used it as a screening room for... some things that he liked to watch. Lyna grimaced as she rummaged around through every nook and cranny, absolutely sure that if there was any trace of Sam or Laurent had seen him recently, it'd be in here. Past a teetering stack of video tapes, and on a rickety desk, Lyna found her answer.
Spread out on the surface, a few polaroids containing Sam as the subject. Ones she'd never seen before nor recognized the origin of, but they were recent, that much she was certain. Namely, because a certain mouse who only very recently moved in the town stood in the frame. Now, she knew where to look, and that she really had overthought this search the whole time. He really was just in the last place she knew he'd went.
Lyna snatched up the photos. She deliberately knocked over the stack of lewd video tapes as she left, kicking some across the floor as she passed through the room and back into the kitchen. She ripped up the photographs as she went down the line, reaching up high and sprinkling them into the soup. Arriving back at the closet door, she swung it open and scampered back inside, slamming it shut behind her.
Immediately, Laurent exited the walk-in shivering and attempting to warm himself, absolutely no idea how he'd gotten locked inside.
Lyna was lucky indeed. Most ramshackle cabins like the one Sajj lived in didn't have closets, but Sam had helped build this one. Thus, he knew that she'd need something to traverse to if she ever wanted to pop by for a quick visit. He was the only reason she could make this traversal, and as usual, she was eternally grateful. Granted, she was still more pissed she had to go to these lengths in the first place.
With that in mind, she crossed from the void into the cabin, and beheld her bunny. In the center of the shack, Sam dangled from the ceiling, folded and trussed into a shibari tie that he'd long since given up trying to escape from. He looked up as she entered, a look of happiness and relief washing over his face, even at her visible consternation. He let out a garbled greeting through his rope gag as Sajj and Em stirred from their bed on the other side of the room. She heard the deer mutter a curse under their breath while the mouse scrambled to cover herself up with the blanket. Lyna stomped over to the closest set of tools she could find to get a knife or a sharp object.
“He's okay, he just lost a bet.”, Sajj called from the bed.
“Mm-hnn. Mmn nn-kay.”, Sam echoed from his spot as the shack chandelier.
“Well I need him now.”, she grumbled, finally grabbing a small knife.
She hopped up on the table Sam hung over, brushing away some spare crystals and tarot cards that'd been left out. She made quick work cutting the rope that held him aloft, making sure to have a tight grip on the pulley before she accidentally sent him crashing into the furniture.
“My bunny.”, she punctuated, finally lowering him gently and safely to the table and subsequently onto the floor. He mumbled a 'thank you' through the gag as she tipped him over, tossing the rope that completed his formerly suspended hogtie over towards the closet door, “Bye.”
She raced over to the edge of the rope and slung it over her shoulder, beginning to drag him along the creaky wooden floor and over towards the closet. Sam raised his eyebrows as a goodbye, directing his glance towards his other friends, still in bed. She disappeared back into the void, and in moments, Sam was gone along with her, the door swinging shut once more.
Finally, she could get things back to being normal.
