basically moth's or butterfly wings are made of a very thin type of scales and are covered in "dust" and if said dust is removed the wings get damaged and then either they can't fly anymore or fly really badly... and it will also harm their camouflage colors and condemn them mostly to die

If you're ever down south in Georgia, make sure to find a way to get into Callaway Gardens near Pine Mountain. They have a Butterfly Center that houses most of the worlds lepidopterae species, and I remember seeing more Atlas moths than I care to remember. They literally have THOUSANDS of the buggers EVERYWHERE. /exaggeration
