Nothing, probably, if they convicted you it'd ruin your life, but I would never actually do it because that would be stupid.

True, but there are a few things you are forgetting. First, you would have to prove that he did it. Second, it is only illegal to deface U.S. currency and then try to spend it. And that only matters if, for example, you were to cut a coin in half and attempt to spend it. Taping a bill back together is legal, as long as the serial numbers match and it is clearly not two different bills. And even then, the cost of the crime is not worth following up unless it is being done to a lot of U.S. currency.
