Sylph’s Backstory
In a remote kobold cavern, Sylph was born to parents who were part of a unique tribal tradition - they spoke a language that was almost uniquely situated among kobolds and other draconic-related races. Draconic was a language passed down for generations. For Sylphs tribe this language was seen as a source of wisdom, and pride connecting them to their ancestors and the ancient ways of their people.
As Sylph grew up, her parents taught her the language, fully knowing the potential ridicule and scorn of other races. She cherished every moment with her parents and the precious moments when they shared stories and knowledge in their ancestral tongue. She reveled in the thought of the adventures that her ancestors had. Secretly yearning for the same wanderlust that her ancestors clearly had.
After some time, Sylph's tribal cavern came under siege by bandits lusting for treasures. Though her clan possessed ample warriors and cunning traps to fend off invaders, Sylph's clan eventually succumbed to the relentless assault. In the midst of chaos, Sylph clung to her parents, and the three managed to slip away from the encampment in a desperate bid for survival.
With nothing but determination and a burning desire for a more prosperous life, they embarked on a journey to navigate the harsh foreign world. The family moved as one unit, their bond growing stronger with each passing day, as they traveled for days, weeks, and even months, surviving by foraging for scraps and evading any potential threats.
Their journey was marked by a multitude of challenges, ever-changing climates, and countless strangers, some of whom posed dangers at every corner. Despite these hardships, the family persevered, their unity a source of strength. It wasn't until a couple of harsh months had passed that they finally reached a bustling city, a place that would mark a turning point in their story.
On one fateful day, as fate would have it, a group of bigoted, self-righteous, and disdainful noble humanoids crossed paths with Sylph's family. The confrontation was a clash of cultures, with the humanoids imposing their beliefs and cultural superiority upon Sylph's parents, who had only a limited understanding of the common language. Demanding that Sylph's parents renounce their cherished beliefs and cultural heritage to assimilate into society, the situation grew tense and confrontational. In a tragic turn of events, fueled by miscommunication and misunderstanding, the altercation took a violent and irreversible course.
The snotty noble humanoids, firm in their religious and cultural purism, cruelly and heartlessly unleashed a volley of crossbow bolts upon Sylph's parents, Sivir and Mirrk, right before her eyes. It was a merciless act that left Sylph as an orphan, forever scarred by the horrifying loss of her family.
To make matters worse, Sylph was briefly held captive immediately after that by a high-profile individual who subjected her to severe physical and emotional trauma. The subtle healed over scars on her body and the occasional haunted look in her eyes hint at the horrors she endured during her time in captivity. In an act of desperation and self-defense, she managed to escape her captor, leaving a trail of unanswered questions and fear in her wake. Sylph is now on the run, with a dark secret weighing on her conscience: she killed her captor to secure her freedom.
For a while she took refuge with a Tiefling Paladin named Ignis whom shortly after her escape from captivity felt a divine calling to protect and guide her. His sense of duty and honor aligns with protecting those in need, he patrolled the streets frequently. Upon her rescue, He was the first person she met whom was kind- and the only person to guide her to learn common tongue. However, he could not protect her forever, or give her a place to stay.
Haunted by the loss of her parents, the terrible violence inflicted upon them, and the desperate actions she took to get to where she is, Sylph had turned to a life of being an Artificer, attempting the crafting of prototype devices in secret. She lived an urchin-style life whilst in the cities, being driven to poverty, frequently having opportunities to learn the harsh ways of the streets. involved in minor petty crime such as stealing trinkets and rocks or food to survive in the harsh world she finds herself in, all while dedicating herself to preserving her parents' legacy and protecting the language, beliefs and culture of her ancestors.
As Ignis and Sylph’s time together evolved, and she further grew up learning common tongue, Sylph one day left her makeshift cot near his in the middle of the night, leaving a folded-up note on her makeshift cot. The note explained in poorly written common that she was setting off on her own adventures and promised to return within a fortnight. Regrettably, the fortnight came and went, and she didn't return. Ignis was left with a sense of both pride and concern, wondering where her path had taken her and if they would ever cross again.
It was this sense of wanderlust, her yearning to create a better life for herself and to escape the clutches of poverty that led Sylph to embark on her solitary journey. Her future remained uncertain, but her resolve remained unwavering as she sought opportunities to rise above her circumstances and create a prosperous future. Her dedication to preserving the legacy of her tribe alive was her guiding light on this new path.
