In the Iliad, there's a curious mention of Chimera (Book XVI, lines 328-329). When speaking about a Lycian or Carian noble, Amisodarus, the poet makes a passing reference to some other story familiar to the audience: "...Amisodarus - the one who had reared the ferocious Chimera, to the bane of many men."
That story didn't survive, and now we can only guess how the baby Chimera got from the underworld, where she was born by Echidna, to the mortal Amisodarus, and why did he decide to keep and raise her.
But that's what probably Chimera looked like back then.
