Just recently, I finished this project for an art showcase at my local library all about Dia de Los Muertos, involving a character drawn just a year ago for my buddy
metroid711. "Madre Xolo" is a fictional figure, based on the importance of Xoloitzcuintli dogs to Aztec/Nahuatl traditions. This breed of dog is said to guide souls through the afterlife, and her dress draws from Chiapaneca fashions with multicolored flowers adding a sense of festivity and beauty to the traditional 'mourning' connotations of black and long veils.
I was particularly inspired by the story of 'angelitos' in Dia de Muertos tradition; spirits who died young and were called to a family's ofrenda along with their elders, and I wanted to make a drawing that was particularly focused around these young spirits.
