From what I gathered, they are ultimately 2 different iterations of an adaption of Lensman. That said, I did watch a little bit of the series and saw that, while the intro uses some movie footage, and character designs were similar, if not the same, they are two separate iterations of a Lensman adaptation. So maybe watching one or the other first doesn't really matter.
