"It's so nice here, we should get to know our neighbors more!" suggested Kaelin to his grumpy boyfriend, Jesse. The two ex-cons hadn't had a lot of luck in making some new friends in their new home, but the sphynx was confident they could do it.
Kaelin and Jesse were cellmates for two years before Kaelin was eligible for parole. The pair had connected in a way Jesse had once thought was impossible, and though he would never say it out loud, he was unbelievably grateful for Kaelin coming into his life. On several occasions he protected the tattooed cat from others, letting the rest of the inmates know that Kaelin was his. Of course, Jesse insisted both inside and out that it was one of those "prison relationships," still having a lot of trouble admitting to himself he was gay.
Soon enough the day came when Kaelin pleaded his case, and while he awaited the parole board's decision, he spent an emotional and intimate night together with Jesse. Before long, Kaelin learned his parole had been granted and the cat would soon be released. Kaelin was overjoyed, but Jesse found it hard to share those feelings; he of course was happy his two-year cellmate would be free, but it also meant he would alone again. Jesse was irrationally overcome with anger, and refused to give his farewells out of spite.
Kaelin did his best to be understanding, but was hurt that Jesse didn't see him off. However, the hairless cat was not one for staying down, and decided he would hold his head high and move forward. Unlike many inmates, Kaelin fortunately had a home to go to (with his parents) after getting out, and was also equipped with some business knowledge he'd obtained from classes on the inside, which had helped at his parole hearing. It was one of the few classes he thought would be the most practical down the road, never having gone to college after high school.
For now, Kaelin embraced his parents and friends who had thrown him a small release party and he got a job at one of the few places that would hire an ex-convict: a vintage clothing store called The Underground, which the cat had already been acquainted with, having got most of his wardrobe from there. After a few months the cat tried dating again - staying away from his usual bad boy type - but none of them held any real interest for Kaelin. He decided to stay single for a while, wanting more than anything to make enough money to cover up that Viper Gang tattoo that still marred the back of his neck.
Meanwhile, Jesse had gone through a wide range of emotions in Kaelin's absence. The tattooed sphynx had left an indelible mark on Jesse's soul, and the scarred hyena found it impossible to get the cat off his mind. He would have outbursts of inconsolable anger, and at night sink into a deep depression. Jesse had long since accepted his lot in life, but realized quickly without Kaelin there, he had to get out.
To assist in his parole hearing - the last one he had done was years ago, and of course hadn't been granted - it was suggested Jesse take some therapy to work through his issues. It was a long, arduous journey of self-discovery and unearthing of past traumas, but thankfully the hyena had enough wits to know he couldn't fly into a rage any time he heard things about himself he didn't like, else his parole would be denied. He did more crying in the year since Kaelin left than he had done in all the years leading up to his imprisonment, having never allowed himself to. As the months went on, Jesse learned to embrace his emotions and the pain of his past, and to come to terms with it. Kaelin eventually became a fond yet distant memory, gone but forever in Jesse's heart.
It would be another year before Jesse's parole hearing, and though he was anxious, the hyena was thrilled to hear it had been granted, though he hardly showed it outwardly. The hyena's parole officer highly recommended Jesse make use of one of Royal City's several transitional homes, since he had no family or friends, nor any money and hardly any possessions. He was required to stay for at least six months, which allowed him to earn some money and eventually achieve some level of independence.
Jesse found work at a hole-in-the-wall pub in Old Quarter, not far from the transitional home. Jesse worked there for months waiting tables and cleaning dishes, but eventually was allowed to work behind the bar. This valuable experience would come in handy later when the bar fell under new management and they threw the ex-con out. An advertisement would soon come Jesse's way, promoting the opening of a new, fancy (and unfinished) condo complex in upstate Royal City called The Jaguar's Lair, and they were looking for workers to fill their massive Convenience Centre of unprecedented scale, which housed everything from a gym to a grocery store. This included several restaurants and bars.
But to apply, Jesse would need some nicer clothes. While not a believer in fate, one of the former inmates staying at the transitional home suggested Jesse try a place called The Underground. Jesse walked in with what little money he had earned, looking for something more professional than his current attire, and with fewer rips. It was when he was glancing at some jackets just a bit out of his price range (though still incredibly inexpensive), when he heard a warm, familiar voice from behind the desk.
"Howdy, stranger," was all the tattooed sphynx said, smiling a handsome grin at the stunned hyena. Jesse just stared dumbfounded at the clerk, a sudden rush of emotions flooding back to him. Kaelin's voice had become so distant in his mind, and yet in that moment it was as if they were still in Royal City Penitentiary. It had been so long, too long, and Jesse struggled to speak.
"H-Hey," he grunted, his voice low and gravelly, cheeks flushed and feeling hot. The two embraced, and Kaelin helped Jesse pick out some clothes. As the owner of The Underground now, Kaelin let Jesse keep his new clothes for free, calling it a belated release gift. They spent little time catching up, but decided to get drinks later to catch up even better. The first thing Jesse did was apologize for how he had left things when Kaelin had got parole, ashamed of his behaviour. Kaelin was more forgiving than Jesse felt he deserved; the hyena felt guilty for the pain he had caused Kaelin, but the cat was surprisingly understanding. The drinks they shared would become the first of many dates to come, until eventually the two would get a home together at The Jaguar's Lair, hoping to make a few friends during their stay.
