Displacer Beast. A classic D&D/Forgotten Realms monster that is permanently cloaked in an illusion that renders its body invisible and projects an image of said body shifted to the side. When a group of hapless adventurers encounter this thing and don't know what it is, they might unload everything they have on the visible monster - which is just an illusion - and then get mauled by the invisible real monster just off to the side.

Oh, and they're a 12 feet long feline alpha predator with almost human-level intelligence, that enjoys hunting and killing for entertainment, weighs 500 pounds, has four forelegs instead of two (all four of which are equally dangerous), excels at stealth, and for good measure, has an additional two tentacles growing out of its back which are studded with vicious barbs capable of piercing steel plate armor.

So in a way, meeting this Tabaxi/DB hybrid is probably the closest you can get to meeting a true DB without dying a horribly painful death.
