Much like Legoshi poor Jack did suffer from his share of anxieties and negative feelings, so I wonder if for him this is perhaps a form of therapy, having been bound and gagged he is still and in a space where he can allow his mind to confront those negative feelings, to honestly cry and realise he can feel true empathy, finally to realise as he works through those fears that if still there they are lessened and he feels somewhat more at peace with himself.
