And once again,
WildKicheko does an ultra-AMAZING job with a commission request.
MANY thanks to Thomas Marrone for the incredible image (of the USS ENTERPRISE A) used as the background.
An avid player of the MMORPG, "STAR TREK ONLINE", I have been wanting to captain the Constitution Refit class from Star Trek VI for many many years. This year, I FINALLY got my chance! While I'm forced to use a Caitian in-game, THIS is the true Tyger Colquhoun-Wolf, Captain of the proud starship, USS JAMES C. OWENS II, NCC-776 A.
The USS James C Owens II is a Constitution Refit-era starship named after a Second Earth War destroyer which recovered both the Gemini V and second unmanned Apollo capsules in Old Earth 1965-66. One of the very last Constitution Refit hulls constructed from the ground up in 2288, she patrolled the Klingon-Federation border, under the command of Capt. Ray Edward Potter, until the Excelsior class's growing numbers superseded her. Later in life, RAdm Potter would fondly remember the Owens as “a plucky little ship.” Stricken from the Starfleet roll in 2310, after 25 years in active service, and five more as a cadet-cruiser, the Owens II was sent to the breaking yards. It was then she suffered an interesting stroke of “good misfortune”, when a computer malfunction sent her careening off into space at Warp 5.
Sixty years later, when the star near Yard 39 went quiet just after the disastrous Battle of Tyra, Starfleet was stunned to discover the intact USS James C. Owens II floating amidst the other hulks in that long-abandoned shipyard. Not questioning good fortune at that point of the Dominion War, Starfleet quickly refitted the Owens and sent her on a shakedown cruise under the command of Lieutenant Commander James F. Kilpatrick. Fifteen lightyears out from Yard 39, however, she was ambushed by a Jem’Hadar Light Battlecruiser. A warrior-phoenix, the USS James C Owens II managed to damage her assailant so badly the enemy abandoned their own ship. For his actions, Kilpatrick was promoted to Commander. The “plucky little ship”s luck, however, was about to run out.
Three days before the victory of the Second Battle For DS9, the USS James C Owens II stumbled onto a patrol of three Jem’Hadar recon vessels. While the Owens defeated her enemies, her victory came at a terrible price: nearly half her crew had been killed – to include her valiant Captain – and the dauntless ship had been badly mauled. Declared unfit for combat, the wounded warrior limped into Yard 39 where she was declared a low-priority repair. The Owens would remain in various stages of repair, largely forgotten.
In 2410, Tyger Colquhoun-Wolf, a newly-minted Fourth-Year Cadet in Starfleet Academy, was assigned to the Miranda class USS Montague as Acting First Officer for his year-long Cadet Cruise. Things went wrong halfway to Vulcan, howlever. The Montague detected the distress call of a cargo ship, the S.S. Break Even, and raced to her aid. Before Tyger could take an Away Team to the unresponsive cargo vessel, a Borg sphere attacked the Montague. Dozens of the Montague's crew, including her skipper, Captain Masq Taggart, were taken aboard the sphere before it retreated. Tyger, acting on instinct and his training, assumed temporary command and ordered the ship to give chase; he would allow neither his fellow Cadets -- nor his Captain -- to suffer the horrors of assimilation.
In a harrowing day that would have broken lesser men, Tyger would relentlessly pursue the sphere from near Vulcan to the Pollux System, where the Montague faced off against a Borg invasion fleet to save the USS Khitomer, alongside the USS Chimera and the famed USS Voyager. Tyger was then ordered to Vega Colony by RAdm Katherine Janeway. The final confrontation with the Borg at Vega Colony would see Captain Taggart and 750 colonists rescued from the Borg's clutches. For his actions, Tyger was award a full lieutenancy and his choice of starships. Having read of the valiant service of the USS James C. Owens II, Tyger requested her as his First Command. Fleet Admiral Jorel Quinn, a Joined Trill whose symbiote, Jorel, had secretly served on the Owens under then-Captain Potter, granted the request.
These are the voyages of the starship, JAMES C. OWENS II. Her legacy continues...
