So, could it mean the black dog is actually a piece of this entity that was stolen and repurposed? And what does that make this mysterious stranger? Is he evil? Good? Neutral? I look forward to finding out.

Also, your idea is very similar to one of my guesses as to what the sought-after item is: some sort of artifact that they placed a significant portion of their own power or soul into—in a similar manner to what Sauron (from Lord Of The Rings) did with the One Ring.
