Even quick art that was jotted out with the flick of a wrist can still look great when it´s finished. With this picture it´s not so much the amount of detail but more the feeling it gives you as you watch longer and longer. Art doesn´t always take long, some of the best works are done in under half an hour.
Even if it may have good intentions I would still freak out and run screaming away from this smiling face. Looking at this picture I can say that it's very well done, the atmosphere is creepy and this thing is catches the eye right away. I can almost imagine how it would be to travel through that hole/cave/place. You see something in the corner of your eye, your heart starts to pump faster, the mouth is getting dry, and just as you try to focus harder a grin appears together with two intense eyes.
A smile is supposed to be something positive, but it can also be used as a decoy. And when something alien smiles it gets more terrifying than soothing. To not be able to interpret the body language puts you in a really uncertain position, and it is there fear takes over. I really need to learn to make shorter comments instead of going blablablabla. :p
Look at those big hands. Perfect for grabbing.

Makes you wonder what makes it so happy. Maybe it thinks it will finally get you this time? Or it's a creature that have no knowledge of human body language and it is actually in a whole different mood than happy/gleeful? The dark itself doesn't scare me, it's the things that may hide in it that makes my imagination go crazy. I always feel I can see something in the darkest part of the darkness, some kind of moving silhouette.
There's two movies you should check out that uses darkness as the source of terror. It's Vanishing on 7th Street from 2010 and They from 2002.
Vanishing on 7th Street could have been better and the ending kinda sucked, but the use of darkness was pretty impressive. They is one of my favorite movies. For an unknown reason it got bad critics and didn't earn much money, I have no idea why. It's a movie worth checking out, I'm sure you will like it. And I have to admit I find it more interesting in a strange sensual way than scary. :D
House on Haunted Hill from 1999 too have darkness as the "villain". It have everything a saturday popcorn horror movie should have and it is best viewed in company with others. It have likable characters, mysteries, betrayal, horror and an entity that really can freak you out. But stay away from the sequel, that was so bad that I had to put by brain in bleach to remove the dirty feeling I got after watching it.

Exactly, I am not afraid of the dark itself, but what may be hiding, or what may be revealed to me from it.
I was actually recently looking for new movies to watch. I will definitely try to find those in the nearby dvd rentals. (I don't download movies because of my limited internet bandwidth)

This is exactly the thing I used to see in the dark when I was younger. I remember laying in bed at night, staring off into the dark, and the moment I'd move my eyes away, I would see this face. It would almost petrify me with terror, and my only strategy would be to hide under the covers and hope it would be gone. After a little while, I would peek out again to see if it had edged any closer, but it would be gone. I'd stare at the blank spot it previously was for a while, but then I would spot it out of the corner of my eye again in another spot, and then I'd be terrified all over again. Eventually, I would fall asleep doing this, and on a few occasions, it would follow me into my dreams, having a sort of unwanted cameo in its natural dark spot, just grinning at me, and giving me its penetrating stare.
I often still see this out of the corner of my eye. It still gives me chills when I do happen catch a glimpse of it.
Gah, I wrote way too much XD.
