Hydra - Powder of Lerna - Commission
Lerna's powder comes from an alkaline, chalky rock found mainly in the Lerna region of Greece. Once ground to a powder and mixed with a binder, often egg white or fish glue at the time, this powder gave a golden glaze that was highly prized on pottery.
But that's not its only interest. It is also known to be the origin of one of the most famous mythological creatures : the hydra. Originally a serpent with several heads, one of which was immortal, it was often made of gold.
Surprising as it may seem, this effect is not triggered by inhaling the raw powder, but after an exposure to high heat. It is perfectly possible to handle freshly extracted Lerne rock and breathe in the dust without the slightest problem (except for mortals lungs). The transformation effect is only possible after firing, for example as a glaze on a vase. Once inhaled or ingested, the powder transforms an organism into a hydra.

of course, a small price to pay considering i did break your vase.

Once I've taken a few samples, as I said earlier to our dear Procene, I should be able to synthesise the powder so that I have some in stock if I need it. The pity is that it was a gift from a friend who lived at the time, a souvenir from one of his own apprentices. Fortunately, the material is just that : it will be repaired very quickly, and I'll even be able to teach you the incantation.

That is an excellent question indeed. In this example, Procene and her friend Torii have separate consciousnesses.

Oh, well, I would be very elated to hear about their experience. Interesting other though I have is, do I refer to a hydra in singular or plural? Hydras are certainly fascinating subjects, especially if you're interested in consciousness and identity of creatures.

besides both my and Torii's heads. the others do act independently to a degree if left to their own devices but, being just tails and a hand previously, they havent developed any identities or a separate consciousness... not yet anyway. both Torii and i can control them when required however, like when manipulation of objects is needed. we have also been working on how to use our magics in this form via such a method, but experimentation is ongoing.
on to your second point; despite the many heads i believe one typically refers to a hydra in the singular. but i think the nomenclature of the word Hydra also has it used in the plural. like "there are Hydra in that swamp" is an example. but ultimately, as long as your meaning is conveyed i dont think it really matters too much.
also thank you for the interest in our new form, it definately makes it feel like my "blunder" is worthwhile.

it was more disorienting than anything else. this isnt the first strange transformation ive undergone and it certantly wont be the last.
i have recently been able to revert to my kitsune form, but i had gotten used to the hydra shape, yes.
