Probably because wolves are supderduperstupidly common. Added tot he fact that a lot of artists don't put much effort in distinguishing their species. Many wolves look like felines, and the inverse, if the artist favors one over the other.
Take Melkiah's avvie for instance. At first glance, I can't tell whether that's a canine or feline. It has big feline ears, but the markings on the muzzle and the shape of the mouth indicate otherwise.
So to answer your question, it's a very easy mistake to make.

P.S a lot dumb people can not tell a fox from a wolf. So yea that tells ya there are pretty stupid people out there.
