One can only push a people so far, until even the meekest amongst them start poppin' caps in people's hindquarters. Looks great, especially considering that it's watercolor (all I'd make is blobs). Something from a World War II era genre?

The piece is done in watercolor on canvas, and yes, mid-century, mid-Europe, later pattern Mosin Nagant.

please tell me about watercolor on canvas. what sort of canvas is used? is it gessoed as canvas for an acrylic painting, or does it need to have some different surface treatment for watercolor?

It is pre-gesso'ed pads of canvas, ready for use. The product is a bit glossy for my taste, as the watercolor doesn't lay on it the same if it were a matte surface, but no so much to be a problem.

oh, and I also wondered, how large is this painting? fairly small, or it is quite course textured canvas, I really like how the canvas texture shows, it makes it sort of pixelated like a tapestry or mosaic

Not terribly big, only about 12 -14 inches/30-35cm? I rarely work larger than that. Hadj was twice that size.
