Depends on how it is used. Machine learning is a tool. It can be used to create art but it cannot do it on it's own without any post-generation editing done by a human. The problem I have with it is that it was misused immediately after it became widely accessible and the way learning models work right now is inherently exploitative due to them scraping the internet for images without consent of people who made them. If it was trained using only consentually provided data and if some people didn't aim to use it to specifically replace artists, I would not be as hostile towards it.

not to mention that the work needed to label the training data itself is exploitative, using workers of third world countries with horrible work conditions to filter out inapropiate images and labeling whats in them. anything made by an algorithm like this needs an incredible ammount of menial, boring, exploitative work behind it

So true! I have NO artistic ability, but will not stoop to using AI to do it for me. Some AI art is good, but it's just too easy!

I wouldn't really call it art, since it's just a machine compiling stolen images together in a certain way. It has no intent, no vision, no things to express.
