The only Ecco game I've ever beaten is Ecco Jr, for whatever that's worth.
I had gotten one or two stages from the end of the PS2 version of Defender of the Future, but even then I got stuck, and just couldn't quite make it to the end. But as for Ecco 1 & 2 on the Genesis, I can't quite remember how far I've gotten, but I've definitely not beaten either of them.

There's a level towards the end of Defender of the Future that genuinely gave me the creeps, like an actual "please get me out of here" kind of fear. I think it was called Transfiguration. Something about the music, along with swimming down into the darkness past a weird spinal creature attached to the walls... it really got me. No horror game has ever made me feel like that. The atmosphere and music is incredible!
The problem with horror games is that they try way too hard to be scary. A game can achieve a far greater sense of terror by not setting the player's expectations in advance, but rather catching them off guard. Not to mention simply letting those feelings be conveyed naturally, rather than shoving it into the player's face by trying way too hard to be creepy.
