This is my fish Tyrant. He is small but furious and makes a habit of flaring at me daily. I did one painting of Kato my cat some time ago and now I have this. perhaps I'll paint my other cat next and finish my collection of pets.

For a non-beta owner- could you explain 'flaring' to me? I've thought of getting a beta a few times, if only to torture my kitty since I would chage the container to a proper glass one :P I've not really seen pics of red ones before, but he IS a pretty one. Usually I see the blue or spotted ones in pics.
When they stretch out their fins is the basic definition of flaring. It's an act of intimidation for males. Betta males are really aggressive by nature (this is why you should never have two males together in the same bowl EVER! They will kill each other). If you go to an aquarium you usually see all the little betta bowls grouped together, and usually the bettas will be trying to look at the fish beside(s) them, with their fins all flared. It's humorous and cute to see because they look like little punks.
Yeah, they are awesome little moody buggers. Thats how I choose them at the pet store for health. Since I buy them from PetsMart and they keep them in dirty little drugged cups, most of them are sick and dying. So if they are still swimming around wanting to kill their neighbor I assume they are in the best shape. He flared at me of all things when I picked him up and I fell in love lol. So he came home with me. He's outlived three other bettas so far, so I'm assuming it was a good choice.
I have had only one betta so far, and he was the cutest combination of blue, red and greenish named Micah. I had him for a year, maybe a year and a half. He was a great fish, hated me to death (or at least that's what I took from him always flaring around me). When I went to college I gave him to my step brother because they had other fish, and he seemed responsible. Of course don't you know he ended up calling me a month later saying he had died. :/ Micah had been completely fine and healthy, and I had at least expected another year out of him. It was sad to say the least.
