Kishi deems Brenner worthy, leaving him entirely at her mercy.

Brenner’s head throbbed alongside his pulsing surroundings. He found himself standing on a black and white checkerboard extending infinitely in two directions. A familiar voice accompanied a constant heartbeat pounding in his eardrums and the slow sound of heavy breathing…
“I hunger for more.” Kishi said with a rumbling purr.
Once Brenner looked up at Kishi, he found a creature far more predatory. An inferno rising behind her purple fur only highlighted her menacing smile full of sharp fangs. Flames also glimmered inside her entirely yellow eyes. Attempting to look anywhere beyond her huge form distorted Brenner’s vision, and at best he saw some fleshy and flexing walls in the far distance.
Chattering abruptly caught his attention. Naturally, Brenner turned around, just to find shadowy silhouettes resembling rats approaching him from the edge of the checkerboard.
Kishi let out a low hiss. “Kill them all…” she said, leaning against the titanic table. “Show me how strong you are…” A far more devious smile slowly spread across her face as she paused for several seconds. “Feed me.”
Brenner grumbled and cocked the bolt on his rifle. “Gladly.”
With that, Brenner aimed and opened fire, advancing toward the other end of the checkerboard. Each gunshot resulted in increasingly bright muzzle flashes. As he struck down shadowy figures, white light gradually blinded him, ear-piercing screeching deafened his hearing, and Kishi laughed and laughed at the carnage unfolding before her demonic eyes…
However, something far more radiant made everything in Brenner’s immediate vision turn white.
~~~~~
Upon finally opening his eyes, Brenner blinked several times before staring at a bright light shining down on his battered and bruised form. The interior of a tent surrounded him. A glance at his bare torso revealed extensive bandages and stitches decorating his flesh amid other anomalies.
“Awake already?” asked an older man nearby.
Brenner reeled as he sat back up, finding a few other wounded men on neighboring beds. “Where… where am I?” he asked, grumbling. “What happened?”
“Easy son...” said the older man before he approached Brenner from the side. His fatigues alongside a patch on his shoulder marked him as a combat medic. “You’re in a field hospital. To say it looks like you went through hell and back would be an understatement, but as far I know, you passed out for a few hours at most. I did my best to remove any bullets or shrapnel still stuck in your body, but your wounds need more time to heal.”
A sharp pain in his arm made Brenner wince. “Where’s Kishi?”
The medic shrugged. “Probably still securing the perimeter if they didn’t redeploy her already. She’s the one who brought you to me, actually, but I don’t know why you were covered in her saliva...”
“Right.” Brenner replied, trying to stand back up.
“Woah, hold your horses!” said the medic before putting a hand on Brenner’s shoulder. “You still need to rest and recover. Worst case scenario, we can carry you in a stretcher if we need to bring you out of here, so just take it easy!”
Brenner practically growled. “My people need me.”
The sudden exchange caught a nurse’s attention as he strolled toward them. “Is that Brenner?”
The aforementioned man nodded. “Yeah, that’d be me. How do you know my name, ma’am?”
The nurse crossed her arms. “Beyond Kishi telling us to prioritize your treatment… or else? You should probably know that it’s mostly over.”
Brenner stood back on his feet and clenched his fists. “What do you mean it’s over?”
“We’ve secured the settlement!” said the combat medic, smiling and nodding. “Now we’re just trying to save as many innocent lives as possible. There’s still wounded among the ruins and… wait… where do you think you’re going?”
Ignoring the others in the tent, Brenner walked away. Pushing some tent flaps open allowed him to see everything unraveling outside as his eyes went wide.
Dropships constantly descended or ascended into the sky. Droves of civilians flooded the open roads with crowds forming near any landed ships. Marines watched over the scene from rooftops, street corners, and other strategic vantage points. Others handed out food and water to otherwise petrified people, who huddled in blankets with many children and the elderly among them.
A faint feminine voice emitted somewhere behind him.
“Should we stop him?” asked the nurse.
“Just focus on treating the others…” said the medic, sighing. “I’m sure he’ll be fine.”
As Brenner left the tent behind, he saw some other scattered marines hauling cargo or other valuable supplies. Some continued to set up a temporary base of operations. Neighboring tents scattered around the construction site served various purposes, whether it be concealing firing positions or acting as ammo depots. Combat engineers continued to fortify the central structure, transforming the place into a fortress or stronghold in all but name.
A lone infantry fighting vehicle even escorted some civilian vehicles down a distant road.
“There he is!” said another masculine voice from a short distance away.
Looking toward the source, Brenner found a squad of armed men wearing gas masks approaching his position. Their weaponry immediately demanded his full attention. Many had anti-material rifles or automatic shotguns fed from a drum magazine rather than the usual laser weapons carried by marines. They escorted a woman with a uniform befitting for a confederate officer, and some stray marines even stopped in place to salute her, but she ignored them nonetheless.
“Is that really him?” she asked, looking back at her entourage. Some shrugged in response. “Or are we just allowing shirtless civilians to wander around our FOBs now?”
One marshal snickered at her words.
“I’m pretty sure that’s the man we’re looking for…” said one of the marshals. “He perfectly matches the given description.”
Brenner rubbed his eyes. “For fuck’s sake… what’s going on now?”
The woman approached Brenner with her hands behind her back. “Are you Brenner?”
He sighed. “Uh… yeah. You’re not the first one to ask me that either.”
“Then come with me.” she said, motioning at him with a free hand. “We’re conducting a full evacuation of the colony, and persons of interest such as yourself are the main priority.”
Brenner took a step back as the marshals slowly surrounded him. “What? Who the hell are you, exactly?”
She frowned and narrowed her eyes. “If you must know, I’m Captain Astra… Kishi’s commanding officer. I like to fancy myself as the official hellcat handler.” Astra stopped speaking to stare Brenner down. “Now don’t make me repeat myself. Come with me.”
A marshal lightly pushed Brenner from behind, forcing him to stumble forward. “But… my clothes!” he muttered under his breath.
“You’ll get new ones.” Astra said with a dismissive wave. “For better or worse, Kishi has taken a special interest in you… and so have I.”
Those last few words sent goosebumps down Brenner’s spine. The marshals forced him to walk with the rest of the entourage in the meantime. They approached a heavily modified infantry transport with anti-vehicle capabilities, but the surrounding marines averted their eyes. Only some civilians watched on and gawked as the elite marshals escorted Brenner into the vehicle, slamming a door shut once they had him inside.
From there, the transport drove off with a few other light vehicles. Their hull-mounted machine guns pointed in every direction they moved, and they made their way to a more massive cargo ship deployed outside the expansive settlement itself.
~~~~~
Marshals resumed escorting Brenner down a metal hallway like a prisoner of war.
“Could anyone tell me what the hell is going on?” he asked, looking over his shoulder. “I thought you cons were here to help!”
Astra sneered. “We are. We’re just keeping you somewhere secure until we decide on what to do with you, considering your unique circumstances.”
Brenner grunted. “I still don’t understand…”
“How do I phrase this politely?” Astra replied, rolling her eyes. “Kishi has claimed you as far as I’m concerned, and I don’t know what she intends to do with you. If you walk out of the cargo bay alive, then we can talk about letting you go or even taking you on as a contractor.”
“You want to recruit me?” he asked, blinking a few times. “Why not just say that in the first place?”
Astra shook her head. “No, no, but it’s a definite possibility. We always need more than just marines to help handle our logistics.”
Brenner cocked his head. “Like what?”
Astra glanced up at the ceiling. “Technicians, cooks, medical staff… you name it. But I digress. We can talk about your ultimate fate if Kishi wants you alive and well rather than just using you as a means to satisfy her… uh… appetite. Yes, that’s the best word for it.”
“Pardon me?” he said, slowing down his walking pace. “You’re kidding, right?”
Eventually, a marshal opened a sealed metal door with a hiss before the entourage stopped in place.
“After you, Brenner.” Astra said with a sly smile. “Gentlemen first.”
Another marshal forced Brenner inside by shoving him from the rear.
Astra waved at him as he looked back at her. “Do say hi to Kishi for me, would you?”
With those words, the door slammed shut. A few mechanical clicks marked the moment it locked him inside.
Once Brenner looked forward, he found an expansive cargo bay before him. Countless shelves and crates contained an assortment of supplies or materials as far as the eye could see. The ceiling even extended far above his head like the interior of a warehouse. However, a far more large and familiar figure sat in the center of the huge cargo bay with her legs crossed, casually drinking a similarly massive cup of tea.
“Finally…” Kishi said, letting out a satisfied sigh and licking her thin lips upon finishing another sip. “I’ve been waiting for you, my little warrior.”
Brenner scanned his surroundings, finding himself alone with the hellcat. She still wore most of her armor, but her combat boots and helmet remained by her side, revealing her exotic feline features. Curved horns and red highlights adorning the dark purple fur on her head only made her look more alien or demonic overall. Her toes unsheathed their claws for a brief moment, allowing Brenner to see five on each digitigrade foot with the fifth ones acting similarly to dew claws.
“I… passed out.” he eventually said, scratching the back of his head.
She smirked. “Oh, I know. Once I had the area secure, I allowed the combat medics to take you off my hands… or more like out of my mouth. I’m happy to see that you’re still alive and in one piece, regardless of how that came to be!”
Brenner groaned a bit, patting down the pockets on his pants to find everything on his person missing. “I think fucking star marshals of all things brought me here right after I recovered…”
Kishi took another slow sip of tea. “Ah, my apologies for that. I made a request for my commanding officer to bring you to me once you made a full recovery. I wasn’t expecting to see you so soon…”
“Is the bitch named Astra?” Brenner asked, perking his head up.
She nodded. “That would be correct. I’d imagine that she introduced herself to you already.”
He shuddered. “Yeah… about that. She forced me to come here against my will.”
A furred tail with a fuzzy, red spade tip swayed behind Kishi. “Oh? How curious…”
Brenner grimaced. “She said that you’ve… uh… claimed me? And that I might not walk out of here alive if I’m only here to fulfill your... appetite… or something.”
Kishi gave him an unamused look. “That’s a crude way to put it. Perhaps she misunderstood my intentions, but your presence here is all that really matters.”
“Okay then.” Brenner said, staying silent for a time as he looked in both directions. “So… what happens now?”
She patted down the space next to herself. “Come. Sit down next to me. Perhaps we can even enjoy some rejuvenating tea together after such a hard-fought battle!”
Brenner stood in place with his back almost against the wall. “I don’t know...”
Kishi scoffed. “I’m not going to eat you if that’s what you’re so afraid of. Do you honestly think that I’d devour you after having the restraint to carry you around inside my mouth for over an hour? Be reasonable now.”
Brenner eventually relented and moved toward the hellcat. “Alright then. I wasn’t really sure.”
“Albeit it was tempting...” Kishi said with a toothy smirk. “I’m quite picky about my prey, so I only want the smartest and the strongest to become part of me, of course.”
“Is there a… reason for that?” he asked, looking at her giant shotgun resting on the floor.
She huffed. “You are what you eat. Don’t you humans know that?”
He did a double take upon seeing some blood and gore on her combat boots. Even more dotted her helmet and armor with random red or brown droplets splattered across it. “Then why am I here?”
“I have yet another proposal...” Kishi said, putting down her tea cup. “And I won’t force you to accept it against your will. I won’t harm you if you reject it either. I’m afraid that I might have been a little too aggressive about things earlier… in the heat of combat… naturally.”
Brenner shook his head. “That’s a huge understatement, but let’s hear it anyway.”
Kishi unsheathed her claws on one hand and rattled her fingers against the floor, creating clicking and tapping sounds. “As you’re probably aware, your entire colony is currently being evacuated. We just fended off the noxum vanguard force. The full invasion fleet is still approaching this planet, so we’re retreating to a more well-defended world within this solar system to regroup with other friendly forces. Now… you could just become a refugee, which is the likely fate of these civilians once we reach another inhabited planet… but you could just join me instead.”
Brenner raised an eyebrow. “Join you? Don’t you mean joining the confederate military?”
“Both, really.” Kishi replied with a purr. “We hire mercenaries or recruit talented locals whenever the need arises. Someone like you could be… mmm… I don’t know if there’s a human word for it. My… auxiliary? Assistant? Maybe even my squire?”
“What would that even entail?” Brenner asked with his face scrunching up.
Kishi looked down at her bloody combat boots. “For starters, it’d be useful to have a personal human for many purposes, such as helping me maintain my armor and weapons at all times. Perhaps they might even let me take you into combat to serve as my own scout or spotter as well.”
Brenner broke eye contact, not saying a word for a time. “And what would I get out of it?”
“A variety of things.” Kishi said, forming a sly smile. “Money. Prestige. The opportunity to kill more of the invaders that burned your home to the ground. That sort of thing. I’d even go out of my way to personally train you, assuming Astra would even allow it.”
He stared at her with a look of determination in his eyes. “So we’re going to be fighting more of the damn rats?”
She nodded. “More than likely. If this is a full-fledged invasion, then I’d imagine that your home is far from the first world the noxum will try to conquer in this solar system.”
“Then I’m in!” Brenner replied, puffing out his chest. “Maybe I’ve lost my goddamn mind, but I want to fight more. I’ll have to sort some stuff out first, like contacting my folks to make sure they’re alright, but I’m definitely more than happy to help you kill far more of these fucking rats!”
An outright demonic smile spread across Kishi’s face as her tail swished behind her. “That’s exactly what I wanted to hear, Brenner! I’d be absolutely pleased to mold you like fresh clay in my paws!”
Brenner shook his head but smiled nonetheless. “Where do we even begin?”
“Maybe by having you clean my boots?” she said, letting out another purr.“Or perhaps not. We have much to discuss first…”
With a grunt, Brenner sat down in front of Kishi to face her, despite the significant size differences. “Like what? I think we’ve established a good deal of things already.”
Kishi raised a clawed finger, smirking. “I’ve only scratched the surface. You’ve already passed the initiation rites with a baptism by fire, but there’s certainly more required before I personally consider you a proper warrior. I’ve never taught or trained a promising human in the ways of my clan before, but I think you’ll be the perfect specimen for an experiment… my little warrior.”
Something about Kishi’s hypnotic gaze and her alluring words like a siren’s song filled Brenner with conflicting feelings of fear and excitement. He closed his eyes and sighed… going against all reason by following his gut instinct, accepting his new role as her personal pawn or blood knight.

I plan on doing more short stories in this setting. This won't be the last time you see Kishi or Brenner.
Otherwise I plan on doing some little lore related things for fun. Also might compile each part into a master document with embedded artwork for a complete novella. Otherwise, I'll be focusing on series such as Friends In Low Places, hope everyone enjoyed this little mini-series in the meantime!

A great mini series!
The Hell Cats are an interesting species that adapted quickly after getting technology from being thrust into the space race… going from enforcers to rulers… they might even take over humanity to serve their every desire.
