I'm sorry, but you'll never convince me that he isn't acting absurdly.
Any rational person would think "Oh no! My best friend hasn't returned! Something bad must have happened! I should go look for him/her/it."
Not "Oh no! My best friend hasn't returned! Surely I have been betrayed, even though she really wasn't that kind of person and gave no indication that she would ever do something so horrible. Now I must join and evil organization and punish the world for the pain that was inflicted on me! Man I sure hope it doesn't turn out that I was wrong, cause I'm waaaaaaaaay past redemption at this point."
