I never manage to find a place where the game was available for renting or purchase. :c
But to be honest, it never appealed to me, I never really liked the graphics or whatever since I only saw stuff about it in videogame magazines at the time. :T
I was too busy with other games anyway. =P

Allow me to be blunt and a bit rude for a second cuz this "Graphics don't make the game" saying is bullshit and an escuse.
I can't enjoy a game I found to be ugly or that it's visual style doesn't appeal to me.
I can go on about this, but I don't wanna spoil my good mood.
I rather not play it. Ever. :c
I don't like it. :c
Now let's just stay with that, ok? :c

Sorry again for butting in then! I was just looking at it from too far a perspective I think...I shoulda just left it as "I agree Earthbound isn't for everybody."
Though, I would love to talk SNES sometime~ I'm playing N64 stuff now, but going back to 16 bit again will be fantastic!

Well, speaking for myself now... I'm not critizising your opinion, you're entitled to your opinion, as is everyone.
I am, however, critizising the way in which you formed your opinion.
I'm not trying to change your mind, nor am I saying your reasons for not giving the game a chance are unfair (cause it's your gut feeling).
But judging a book by it's cover (or a game purely by the graphics) is ... well.
Ever hear of Minecraft?

Minecraft's approach is totally irrelevant to earthbound.
Minecraft's graphic choice is due to practicity and style since NOW retro is fashionable.
Therefore, making it's graphics good since it's well designed for the main concept of the game.
But what people INSIST on ignoring, is that I'm entitled to dislike stuff for whatever reason.
Like, I'm not oblidged to buy something that doesn't appeal to me as a whole and earthbound's graphics are just ONE aspect of what I don't like. And I'm not talking about the resolution, or if it sprites move or not. I JUST DON'T LIKE HOW IT LOOKS! IT DOES NOT APPEAL TO ME!
DEAL WITH IT.

Jeez, relax with all the ALLCAPS yelling already. You're setting yourself up for trollbait. :/
I recognise your reasoning. I too considered myself not the target audience for Earthbound, for a number of reasons.
Then I tried it and was blown away by how wrong I was
But I see you're not gonna accept honest discussion and instead, you're just gonna get angrier and angrier for being sooooooo misunderstood and insulted that, well, screw it. Forget I even said anything. -_-;
Also you forgot the

I hate to but in, but you look like ya need an 'Sall good!' :c. Earthbound's not for everyone~ Sure, it's a fun game, but you're right, it's a weird game, not to mention weird LOOKING. Not everyone digs 16-bit anymore, and this games fighting scenes are just...well...Welcome to acid?
I like 16 bit games a heck of a lot. I still play Snes.
My point is that I'm not oblidged to like whatever other people like.
Like, I adore LAIR on the PS3, but people also judge it by it's cover or are ultra-biased due to reviews.
I love several games that most people think it's crap. But that's not important.
The important is that I like whatever I do.
And if I don't like something, I shouldn't be judged for whatever reason.
My point with the "graphics don't make the game" saying is that it IS appropriately bullshit.
Any Artist or Designer knows the value of visual quality to whatever they're doing. If a system doesn't allow you to fulfill your vision due to limited hardware, that's a big setback. Look around, any developer of whatever, be that games, CGI or movies, have a consensus on that. One of the most reccurent phrases you'll hear is "We're not able to do things we couldn't before". A bit example is Avatar cuz James Cameron had the idea a decade ago, but it wasn't doable cuz there was no way to acomplish his vision.
And that works for any Artist or Designer.
So, on a big enphatic "YES", graphics DO make whatever. Having the liberty to make justice to your vision is NOT something to underestimate.
Especially since graphics set the whole mood and identity to whatever you're doing. It is of OUTMOST importance.
It's not the MOST important, cuz nothing should depend on a single aspect of it's . But it is one of the most regarding it's quality.
There are good games out there, but how can I enjoy something if it's visual identity doesn't appeal to me? It's frustrating, so I don't play it.
It's all a matter of appeal. Games are and always will be PRODUCTS, regardless of their quality. And people seem to forget that.
I just ain't part of the audience for Earthbound and I reserve my UNDENIABLE RIGHT TO DISLIKE IT.
Is that REALLY so hard to understand?

"Running Gag"
As in "Gag" refering to a giggle or a small joke not always intended to make you laugh out loud but in a more subtle approach.
The "Running" aspect is that it is incidental, that it occurs several times.
So, a running gag is a small joke or a continuation of a past joke that occurs later within the same media it originated (say, a tv show, a videogame or a movie).
For example, in Mortal Kombat, there is always a random "Toasty" in the games or Johnny Cage getting humiliated in gory ways. Those are running gags since they happen a lot in the game's sequels.
An example in TV is South Park's "OMG! They Killed Kenny!".
Metal Gear Solid (and several Kojima games) is filled with running gags, the most recent and most used are references to General Raikov in MGS games that depict an alledged past relative of Raiden. He is usually used in comedic manner to ridicule Raiden since he was born out of a maneuver to make MGS more interesting to different audiences (girls) by making the main character a Bishounen. The backlash of the character being found unpopular ended up with Kojima and his crew to "vent" on Raiden in several comic ways (especially on trailers and easter eggs on most MGS games since MGS2).
Tho they found redemption for him in MGS4 and he became quite popular, General Raikov (who appears in all MGS games in wich you control Big Boss as an unlockable) is still humorously used as comic relief.
