In the breakroom at work there's a little framed motivational poster thingy with this quote on it. This is what i think of whenever i see it...
It's creepy how the company claims to revere the guy (their founder, who is dead) as well as his ethics, but has strayed so far from his vision... It's a lot like a cult or a religion. Repeat the prophet's words but warp them toward your own gain!
Ok, lunch is over. -.-

Woot for courtesy, hardest worked and least paid! High paw! XD I was the courtesy ninja of 4256 for about 6-7 months till two weeks ago when I entirely accidentally impressed a job agency manager who came in with his pregnant wife. Now i'm on 3rd shift at a factory.
The pay's a lot better, though I kinda miss being outside all the time. XD I don't miss doing 4 people's job at once for minimum though while the management rains clueless-ness down though..lol.

Currently courtesty associate; formerly sales associate. #2708. Assimilated 5+ years back. Store has some great associates. Some associates AND managers will 'Sir' me. I literally applied with ears and tail on. Did it partially as a joke. They replied with 'fastest hire heard of'. Retail was my passion. Now, it's just a job. After they shipped in a nightmare from a Florida branch, I told them 'I quit'. They replied, 'No. You don't.' (She came from a living Hell branch, no doubt.) Now, I'm told to stop working so hard and yearly review keeps complaining that I must learn more of the store.
ohoh! You might find my 'list of cart stupidity' amusing....or stupid. Or at least familiar. XD

Ha ha! I am familiar with all of those, except for the snow related ones. Store #866 is in Mobile, Alabama. We hardly ever see anything even resembling snow. lol
And to clarify just a tad, I have worked at 3 different stores (at 866 twice, woohoo for transfers! XP ) and I have not committed 9 years of my life to being a courtesy associate. I started in toys, moved to cashier, upgraded to layaway, got slapped back to cashier when layaway was banished, and then finally became a cart-pusher (thanks to my D-day >.o ). I was supposed to be moved back inside as a cashier earlier this month, but this still has not come to fruition.

Y'can be glad for the lack of snow there! It's a pain when yer the only courtesy in the morning of a supercenter and they want you to keep the lot awesome while clearing/shoveling and salting everything from L&G to GM to Grocery and around the entire side of the store to the smoking area...and they seem to want ya to do it in like an hour or less. lol XD
Ahh, they should give you promotion! :o You've been all over! :>

Totally glad that there is no snow here! But, hurricane season does get a bit tricky. Nothing quite like trying to catch a whole line of carts being blowing around in 75+ mph winds, with sideways rain, and this is all with the police telling our store manager that, "It is, in fact, TOO dangerous for your associates to be outside. And you can go to jail." My ex-managers face after hearing this = priceless!
A promotion would be nice, but then again a genuine thank you, with a pay raise, would go a long way too! LOL

I just got gipped out of my job after working for them for 6 months. They tried to fire me for something "made up" one week and after I defended myself found something else to fire me for the following week. This was right before getting benefits and bonuses to full time emoployees.
This was the 'scam' I speak of. I felt super let down by the way I was treated. :(

I had the owner of a Jimmy John's where I worked fire me on the following basis:
She went to Vegas. The first night there, she said she got a phone call from me, from jail, asking her to bail me out because I'd gotten in a fight with my bf, he beat me, I had him thrown in jail, did a bunch of drugs and drank, stole his car, totaled it, wound up in intensive care, escaped, got arrested, and had no one else to bail me out. Also, when they drug tested me, they found out I was pregnant.
I came into work the next day and her husband had told my entire store this story and removed me from the rest of the schedule.
He DID think it was strange that I was out of jail and all, but ultimately he believed his wife.
...
In reality, I'd just gone home from work and played world of warcraft. c_c; Much less exciting.

I read somewhere that the guy was actually a P.R. bullshit artist and never meant any of the stuff he said, especially that crap about Made-in-the-USA.
Before I started looking into it, I thought he was this great guy too. But the cheapest sweatshopped Chinese junk they could get was actually the plan all along and his family's just running it the way he always intended... And their lawyers/accnts were ALWAYS looking for ways to get communities and cites to offset the costs of building the damn things everywhere on top of that. I saw it happen in my own town...they literally embezzled straight from the taxpayers to build it on the promise of "jobs". (all Seasonal ones with no advancement)
Their faith based donations for tax write-offs is also a huge profit retainer for them apparently... they drop a little cash and get it right back again ten-fold. They got most of the country duped, it's very impressive. I wish our stupid government was half as good at lying and taking over entire industries as these crafty SOB's are. Maybe we wouldn't be in debt.

I think this works for just about any retail environment, but yeah I hear Walmart is particularly vile to its employees. Have you ever watched that documentary about Walmart thats on Netflix? I forget what its called but OMG some truly awful stuff goes on in that company. :/ Glad I never got sucked into working there but my mate did for like 2 weeks before they fired him because he supposedly threatened to knife someone with his boxcutter. >.< It sucked at the time and of course was total bullshit but in hindsight, I think he was probably lucky to get out of there.
They get away with is for a number of reasons.
1. Foreign countries don't have the same worker/human rights as the US does. Even though there are some weak areas in the US with regards to this, we have it far better than people in India or China. There is barely any regulation stating the company cannot get you killed.
2. People are forced to work there and its subsidies because it is all that is available. Because they are so poor and jobs so hard to find, they will put up with such conditions based on the fact if they didn't they would end up starving to death. What a fun choice, facing being horribly killed in an "accident" or starving to death.
3. There is a section of Americans who can afford NOT to shop at Walmart but due for the fact it is cheap, has everything they generally need in one place. Even though they can afford to shop at more premium grocery stores and other retail outlets, they choose Walmart to save money.
4. There is still a section of America that cannot afford to live without the company. The tragic irony is that there many millions of Americans who cannot get enough food in the US followed by many more who are just barely able to make it. So Walmart has become essential for their continued existence, when you can buy a large bag of rice, beans and other calorie rich items for a couple dollars and cannot afford to pay the "few extra cents" at another store. I remember someone who was better off than me trying to argue I should not go to Walmart years ago when I was in dire straights, stating a can of soup, bag of rice, or frozen vegetables costs maybe $.10 more at a local grocery than there. When you buy ten of those items a week, 52 weeks a year that comes out to $52. When you are lucky to make rent much less utility payments a month, that $52 a year becomes SIGNIFICANT.
There are many other reasons, such as America's lust for cheaper and bigger, as well as others but those 4 are pretty sufficient for the dire picture that many choose not to see.

Oh believe me, I've been in the number 4 position myself...still kind of am sometimes. I pretty much make just enough to get by from one week to the next, living paycheck to paycheck with no hope of saving anything for the future right now, and I have no means of transportation so sometimes getting everything in one place is necessary. When you only have a few bucks to spend on food, you learn really quickly where and how to stretch your dollars. I used to buy my groceries at Walmart but right now there's a grocery store thats closer, so I go there. I've been resorting to eating a LOT of ramen (probably more than is healthy) and yeah, I shop there sometimes cuz its generally cheaper and everything is all in one place. It sucks that such an evil company is so damn convenient, and that it gets away with treating its employees so bad, but I guess people always have a choice not to shop or work there if it really bothers them, I just feel bad for those who don't have a choice. :/
You forgot the biggest "Protector" of all of those.... the National Chamber of Commerce. You can do a lot of truly horrible things in the name of business in this country and still have Capitalism function like a well oiled machine for-all-involved. But lately the old Profitability standards of the previous 50 years hasn't been enough for the new fortune 500's. To really surpass it, they've rushed into taking over control of all major political establishments to push this Global-Economy mantra. It's basically to capitalism what proxy porting is to honest open-dialog b/c its main effect is to preserve that massive disparity of power and human rights.
You work at Walmart?I would say I'm sorry but I honestly miss working there. I'm currently working myself to death at a factory making less than the Walmart employees I know. So much for the value of unions.
I do agree that Walmart has strayed very far from Old man Walton's vision of how employees should be treated and how a business should be run though. But what can one do?

And I work at Old Time Pottery.
We sell your stuff after your places get liquidated or can't sell it for 90-40% of what you charged :V
That doesn't stop the company and the customers from being complete twats though.
HUMP HARUMPH HOW DARE YOU CHARGE $14.99 FOR A SHEET SET I HAVE CONVINCED MYSELF WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ON SALE FOR $12.99 I CAN GET THAT CHEAPER AT WALMART. Yes, lady. Please ignore the Walmart sticker on it that says it was $25 there.
The best is when we get stuff from Kohls. They ALWAYS have the original sticker on them and it is ALWAYS more than twice what we charge.

We have pretty much everything, yeah. With a combined effort of where we get it from and how much they make us each do with almost no supplies and barely above minimum wage. :D
Seriously. They don't even want to give us trash bags anymore for use in receiving. We have to not just use, but RE-USE cardboard boxes for our garbage. :|

Hey, another Wal-mart furry! :) I'm on the night IMS team, how about you?
This is exactly how I feel working in the backroom every night. I can bust my ass every night, and sometimes make a little bit of progress, but by the end of the week, the back stockroom is just another mess with nowhere to put anything, and I'm back to where I started from. Whee!

OMG, it's the same here... Overnight backroom (technically my jobcode is still maintenance, but I'm doing backroom work for less pay (I do maintenance maybe once a month, the rest is backroom). There's no room to put crap in the backroom anywhere, and when room is made, they shove a different department into the spot instead of the one that's supposed to be there.
That boulder should be bigger :U
Wal-Mart sucks. I'm a CSM at mine. :< I deal with every customer's complaints about stupid shit that shouldn't even matter. IF YOU'RE NOT BLEEDING TO DEATH OR MISSING A LIMB DON'T TALK TO ME. :P
The company really does screw everyone over as if we're blind. But alas, bills must be paid somehow, I suppose. :/

Wal-Marts a goddamn shit-hole end of story! I worked for them for 4yrs on 3rd shift. Day shift NEVER did anything wrong and they would never do their work leaving it for 3rds to do plus their work ontop of that. Managers were caught having sex with employers in lawn and Gardens,Bakeray, produce room and nothing happened to them they still have there jobs! I watched great workers being booted put the doors so they can keep the worthless ones because they knew they wouldn't have to give them a raise. I seen pregnant women, blacks, gays, ectect treated like shit and fired because an upper managment didn't like who/how/what they are. I tore signs like that down all the time when I worked there :| I feel for you my friend....I hope your Wally world wasn't as bad as mine <3
"Day shift NEVER did anything wrong and they would never do their work leaving it for 3rds to do plus their work ontop of that."
It's confusing what you're trying to say here, but sounds like you're saying Day shift didn't do anything and left their work for 3rdshift, which is night shift, to do. If you've never worked day shift you probably don't know the whole story, and I don't know about your Wal-mart, but the night shift at mine leaves crap behind for days to pick up, so they don't have time to do their work which means they leave it for 3rd shift who can't finish their work so they leave it for days. It's a vicious cycle and it all really comes down to bad management.
Far as the rest of your state, it's sad how true that is. Managers have their favorites who they gives promotions to whether they are fit for the job or not and they fire the people they don't like for the stupidest reasons. They keep pushing on us all these codes of respect and what not to do on the job then turn around do the things we were told not to do. I've worked for Wal-mart for 9+ years so I've seen it all.

I know friends that worked at other Wal-Marts that had the same problem or like the one you had. What I ment was 1st shift would never work leaving 2nd shift to do 1stshifts work and their own, knowing they can't do it all, what was left we had to do plus our own work and if we couldn't get don 1stshift would bitch up a storm because we didn't get 15hrs worth of work done in 8hrs which never made sence because they never did it anyways lol
Perfect image for the quote. XD Totally visualizes what it's like workin' there. =P Now hurry up and get that ball up there, you're doing it too slow, also don't forget to do other folks' jobs while you're at it, simultaneously. Could you stay an extra hour, that guy we'll never fire for some reason is 2 hours late for the thirtieth time.
You and me suffer the ills of walmart, the people there are so twofaced, and tricky, I have the best collection of old women pot smokers who are awesome to talk with, take the perks with it all, my own is the conversations. at times, people suck and can't take a little pressure, at others, FUCK MANAGMENT, I can't believe the shit they've try to pull, still, yah, brutal times. may your own go well.
I worked for the company from 1999-2004. Even back then there was constant talk of how cultlike the signs, morning meetings (with the chants!) and general trappings were.
But keep in mind that the current state of the corporation is not a perversion of the original; it's merely an expansion of it. Sam Walton was an unbelievable, notorious cheapskate, and the company reflects his attitude.
I once read an interview in the company magazine with a former pilot of his. This guy would fly Walton around to several locations in a day in a small aircraft, then drive him in rented cars to nearby stores for surprise visits.
All good there, right? But the pilot tried to describe how Walton was a "regular guy" with the following anecdote: Walton asked the pilot if he wanted something to eat, and said he would pay for it. The guy said yes. So Walton had him stop at a convenience store, went in, and came back with a quart of buttermilk and a pack of crackers. AND MADE THE PILOT SHARE THEM WITH HIM.
Yup, tokes of backwash buttermilk with Sam Walton. Who was already spending thousands of dollars a day on vanity-based surprise store inspections. And this was presented as a good thing.
