"Perciever" was intended to be a part to bring one into the story, a sort of daring and active piece, positive but enough sinister undertones to really indicate tension. This is the middle of the film, if you will; it's the slow discovery of the full depth of the plot. Only more recent videogames have been able to manage a rich narrative structure of this sort (at least with the games I play!) and thus the sound strays a bit from the tried-and-true.
Also, this was right when I was really and truly falling in love with my newfound ability to make Impulse Tracker – a program which works solely with pre-recorded sample playback, like a glorified Mellotron – sound more like a vintage analog synth, using the various frequency-filtering features that were added to the program late in its development. The sounds I'd created just didn't seem to lend themselves to an active videogamey thing in this case, but something complex in emotion. Caress that theremin like a lover going away for a long while. That's the sound I wanted!
Sorry for rambling. There's a reason I intentionally avoided doing this in the submission description... *grin*
