Welcome to life in the real world. I'll slip your membership card in the mail later today. XD
On a more serious note to add emphasis to your point, think of all the millions of people who have given their lives in service to their respective countries, and almost none of them are remembered by the public. However, one can be dishonourably discharged from his military for dealing drugs to his fellow soldiers, and that person is rewarded with millions of dollars, unlimited publicity, and legal impunity for anything he does for the rest of his life. (shrug) It sucks, but that's life.

Any publicity is good publicity. I can actually see something like that happening today, the memes would be out of control and everyone would be buying the stuff to make silly tictoks. It would spread across every social media platform without having to pay a cent of actual advertising money. Pure genius strategy actually.
Honestly, I'm kinda in dry-entry bossman's camp here. It was sheer dumb luck, and not skill. As much as I love Ryder, her omission of the umlaut—albeit intentional and with reason—displayed a careless inability to foresee the potential consequences from either choice. Honestly (as painful as it is to say it), she doesn't deserve the promotion, and bossman is absolutely correct on this page. Is he gruff about it? Sure. But he knows and performs his job well.
Yes, everyone makes mistakes, but Ryder here made a big mistake, and she faced some very lucky consequences.
