Aren't those casts? I thought a splint was a stick or rod crudely tied to the outside of a broken limb to keep it from moving around in lieu of something more sturdy like a cast, usually used in wilderness survival situations. Or did Hollywood lie to me YET again?
Also I feel like a lot of kids who need casts would actually love theirs to look like what Jeff just made. :P

I could be mistaken, but I believe a cast serves the same purpose as a field-triage splint like what you described -- namely, to keep a broken or injured limb immobilized in the correct position to allow it to heal naturally. I've only had partial casts before, but they seemed like they had splints integrated into the wrapping at specific points.
So the primary difference between a cast and a splint is that a splint has a hard part that supports the limb generally on one or two sides while a cast is hard all the way around.
When an injury first happens you splint it, not cast it, because you need to give the limb room for swelling. If you cast it (put a hard shell around the injury), it won't have room to swell which can be super painful and lead to tissue damage.
When we give someone a splint in the hospital, the hard part that supports the limb is made of hardened plaster (usually) and then we wrap it all up with ace wrap to hold the limb on the hard plaster. (There's a few more steps in there but that's the gist of it). Casts are made of fiberglass and are provide a hard shell around the entire limb.
I hope this made sense and didn't confuse you more ^^;
