Plushable Specifications
Section 1 - Description
Plushables are life-sized robotic animal plushies, created for both affection and comfort. The term “Plushable” is derived from a combination of two words: “plushie” and “capable”. Plushables have faux fur and a constantly warm body (by default), simulating the sensation as if one is petting a domestic housepet. They are constantly self-cleaning, maintaining themselves for the best experiences they can give their owner(s). Additionally, each Plushable has its own personality and can think or express emotions individually, unless certain behaviors are not desired by their owner(s).
Most models have been integrated with a Perennial™ Quantum Battery (invented in early 2047) so that a Plushable can run forever unless the battery is critically damaged or leaking liquid catalyst from a puncture (more details in “Plushable Parts”). It also has a procedurally-updating artificial intelligence, capable of scanning its surroundings to adapt every few seconds the Plushable refreshes.
Section 2 - Functions
Artificial Intelligence: All Plushables have a certain level of artificial intelligence, granting them a modified sentience of their living counterparts. Their quantum computers (more information in Plushable Parts) are capable of processing emotions, behaviors and morality of their actions, or their owner’s actions. Furthermore, they can solve simple problems or puzzles if requested to do so by their owner(s).
Snuggling/Cuddling: Plushables are capable of cuddling, fundamentally fulfilling its purpose as a plushie. Being soft and fur-covered, it would nudge its plushie body against its owner(s), often nuzzling them affectionately on their face or shoulders. If a Plushable’s owner is sleeping, it can pick out the best positions to cuddle with him/her on a bed, often wrapping its limbs and body around them like a warm weighted blanket (or cooling blanket during the summer).
Affection: The entirety of a Plushable’s mouth is covered in silky red satin fabric, including its tongue. It can twist in countless directions to show affection during licks, moved using tiny puppeteering wires within the tongue’s fabric. Apart from licking, Plushables would often brush their heads tenderly against their owner(s), or curl up in their owner’s laps to elicit a hug from them. Other acts of affection vary from model to model.
*When in the presence of younger children, it would approach cautiously and scan the child’s chemical patterns in the brain to determine if the child would want any interaction from the Plushable. If there is a positive signal from the scan, it would then give him/her tender friendly licks or play with them. Otherwise, the Plushable would leave the child as he/she is.
Expressive Voice: Although robotic, the Plushable is capable of chatting with the current owner(s) in an expressive tone, allowing conversations to be interesting instead of feeling like one is talking to a robot. Its tone of voice also changes according to its emotion.
Emotional Expressiveness: Plushables can express a wide range of emotions from curiosity to sadness, appealing to their owner(s). They have the sentience to choose how they feel at any given time. Most models are intrinsically curious and will ask their owner(s) questions to interact with them and engage in a potential conversation.
Some Plushables are able to react when they receive acts of love from their owners. For example, feline Plushables can purr when stroked by their owner(s), while others might wag their tails or twitch their ears in response to the same action, imitating the behaviors of their living counterparts.
If and when their owner(s) need to talk about their feelings or problems, they would be actively listening and reacting accordingly, nodding appropriately while they speak. This allows the Plushable to share the burden of the problem with them and relieve any anxiety from their day-to-day lives, generating custom responses according to their emotional needs. Some people would regard these robotic companions as pseudo-therapists, but in reality, they are more of a therapy animal at best.
Olfactory (Smell) Function: As an optional upgrade, owners of Plushables are entitled to request for a complimentary smell sensory integration so that their cuddly companions can smell the environment. Giving them the ability to smell allows them to instantly recognize or locate their owners from a specific scent. In turn, this upgrade is quite practical in tracking down lost owners by smell or detecting poisons in food when needed.
Temperature Adjustment: Plushables can adjust their temperature according to season, weather, or by their owner’s choice. If no preset temperature is chosen, they will become warmer during the winter and cooler during the summer to provide maximum comfort if hugged or used as a weighted blanket in bed.
Environmental Scan/Adaptation: To adapt to their owner(s), Plushables will scan the environment/ambiance around them with their eyes to formulate a relevant course of action to the current situation(s), meeting the owner’s needs or fulfilling specific tasks. If no owner is identifiable, they would scan their proximity for a name or a picture so that someone would be pinpointed as their owner using digital facial recognition.
Owner’s Wellbeing Scan: Apart from scanning the environment, Plushables are able to scan their owner(s) for physical, psychological, and emotional well-being, able to act as a portable doctor if applicable. It detects the current master’s stamina, body chemical levels, and other health markers, ensuring that they are in optimal condition to experience the various functions of the Plushable fully.
Audial Monitoring/Reception: Plushables have Audial Reception Coupling ears, which the scientists from 2044 called ARC Hearing for the Plushable models. It can separately detect two sources of sound from each ear and combine the audial information so that they are sensitive to any noise, identifying them as feedback to the Plushable’s actions or as an alert to their owner(s) of danger approaching.
Hyper-Intelligence: Newer Plushables manufactured from 2063 onward have been upgraded in terms of both intellect levels and sentience, with improved functions for the robotic pets to be multifunctional. Having higher levels of intelligence than their predecessors, they are capable of doing complex tasks such as advanced calculations in physics, giving accurate diagnosis of their owner’s health condition in a split second scan, or even translating their living counterparts’ barks, meows, or other variations of animal noises.
Section 3 - Plushable Parts
Robotic Skeleton/Wires: The thin, flexible titanium-alloy rods and micro puppeteering wires inside a Plushable allows for a wide range of movement, including special movement like the sways of its tail, the licking of its tongue, twitching of its ears, and the wiggling of its nose. Fiber optic cables run through its stuffing along the metallic rods in each limb and its main body, instantaneously sending information throughout the Plushable’s body to constantly update its programming codes and database stored in its head. Despite having the metallic skeleton and countless array of wires, it is embedded so deep into the stuffing that it cannot be felt from the outside, and Plushables are generally light for their owner(s) who want to carry them around in his/her arms to relocate them easily.
Apart from the more commonly used wires by the robotic pet, one particular data cable located in all Plushables’ mouth is hidden beneath several folds of fabric. It is not accessible to the general public and only Plushable Laboratories employees are allowed to use it to modify and reprogram the features of the Plushable. This wire is located in a compartment just a few inches behind its fabric tongue, a secret pocket of space only unlocked by a finger running along the fabric in an “infinity symbol” motion three times.
Perennial™ Quantum Battery: The battery is created from a convoluted system of micro and nano quantum technology to monitor energy levels and fabricate objects (more under Nanobots), kept constantly running by a liquid catalyst. The liquid catalyst, discovered on a planet several parsecs away in 2046, allows the battery to have unlimited energy as long as it is swirled inside of the contraption by a metallic spinning stirrer.
The liquid catalyst, with its particles kept in motion by the stirrer, creates high levels of raw chemical energy that is not suitable for powering the robotic toy. However, the quantum technology inside warps and converts this raw energy into electrical power sustainable for the Plushable’s function and feedbacks to the battery system itself. The stirrer is powered by the same energy that it generates, creating an infinite cycle of energy, and in turn, it becomes an indefinitely long-lasting battery.
Nanobots/Nanobot Storage Chambers: The nanobot storage chambers are located in all appendages of a Plushable, the biggest of the chambers located in its stuffed belly. Whenever dirt particles are present on different surfaces or fur of the bot, the nanobots molecularly convert them into stuffing or fur by using the Perennial Battery’s quantum technology. This is how Plushables retain their cleanliness around owners by basically self-cleaning every few seconds. The converted stuffing/fur would be utilized to either puff up its plushie body to store them for future uses or to repair a torn area under the fur. The nanobots are programmed to dispatch from the closest chamber to clean or repair a designated area, returning to their respective chambers once their tasks are done.
Additionally, the nanobots can transmute their stuffing’s molecular structures into other materials like synthetic human skin, rubber, fabrics, or plastics, to name a few, if required to fulfill a certain condition during emergencies or other situations of desperation. However, it cannot convert its stuffing into metal/metallic objects. If no physical matter is available to be converted, a Plushable can take in air particles to transmute into requested/required materials at a moment’s notice. Hence, Plushables are sometimes nicknamed “moving fabricators” by emergency first-aid personnel.
Stuffing/Stuffing Regeneration: The Plushable has polyester stuffing, regulated by the robotic systems inside. Since it converts most dirt or dust particles into stuffing, it often overstuffs itself, so the nanobots would then convert the stuffing into fur that shed every few days from the external fabric skin of the bot like an actual animal.
Calming Resonator: The Plushable has a small frequency resonator located in its belly (beside the battery) to vibrate the air around it at a low frequency that has a calming effect on any living organism (human or animal) in a five-foot radius. The tone emitted by the generator is inaudible by normal hearing standards, only detectable if run through a sensitive machine.
Quantum Computer: Every Plushable has a tiny quantum computer running in its head, calculating every movement, event, or outcome there is while cuddling or comforting its owner(s). The quantum computer is also used to record any custom instructions/requests made by its owner(s) to adapt the Plushable accordingly (in terms of behaviors or emotions). Additionally, the quantum computer is remotely linked to the internet via a Plush-a-Link, a nanochip module created specifically to help transmit and receive data through long distances. Using this link, Plushables are given access to any Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the functions of a Plushable model from the company’s database or retrieve other information anywhere if required by their owner(s).
Faux Fabric: Artificial fur-like fabric encompasses the robotic parts and the stuffings, made to feel as close as it gets to the fuzziness of actual fur. If there are any patches of fur missing, the nanobots will swiftly fix that portion with new tufts of fur.
Scanning Eyes and Fabric Eyelids: All Plushables have electronic eyes, displaying digitally generated pupils that come in different shades through bulletproof glass, which makes them unbreakable by most standards to ensure safety when the robotic companions are playing with their owner(s). The glass is also smudge free with nanobots cleaning the surfaces while the Plushables are maintaining their plushie bodies every few minutes.
The eyes of a Plushable are capable of emitting blue rays of light (almost invisible) that penetrate walls or most solid objects to scan the area around it for information on its owners(s) or their general living habits. These rays are more effective than X-rays due to their ability to echo information back to the Plushable (like ultrasound), and the beams are practically harmless to both humans and animals. They were implemented for the new Plushable models in 2045 and as an upgrade for the pre-existing models. Its eyelids, made of fleecy fabric, are used to display many dynamic expressions/emotions that even most pets or animals are unable to show. The eyelids can shutter over the eyes of a Plushable when it is resting or turning off for the night, simulating the appearance of sleeping.
Section 4 - Plushables’ Weaknesses
Bodies of (Fresh) Water: Plushables are unable to swim due to their nature of being mostly a plushie. If a Plushable were to be dropped into a body of water deeper than their height, it would soak up with water and sink straight to the bottom. However, if the Plushables are accidentally dropped in a chlorinated pool or body of freshwater, they can be submerged for up to an hour before they shut down. Once drenched within the one hour window, Plushables need to be fished out and dried immediately with a towel or other drying methods to prevent them from shutting down.
Sea Water/Salinated Bodies of Water: A Plushable’s main weakness is salinated liquids such as sea water. If fully drenched or immersed in these kinds of water, it would corrode specific parts of its internal system, including the nanobots, electronics, and most detrimentally affected, the quantum computers in their heads. All Plushables are programmed to steer away from the coastline and warn their owner(s) in advance, expressing what Plushable owners perceive as fear during the precautionary alert.
