In reality, Firefly Axolotls are created by a cruel process, in which parts of their body are cut off and replaced with one of another color, taking advantage of their amazing ability to regrow missing limbs.
For a Protogen, however, it's a much different case. Being inherently "plug and play", a Firefly Protogen could exist simply because the replacement parts they ordered arrived in the wrong color.
