This past summer, I loaded up two of the grandcubs for a trip to visit Big Brutus, which is located in West Mineral, Kansas.
According to the Big Brutus web site, the machine was constructed in 1962 by the Bucyrus Erie company for the Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Company. 16 stories tall and weighing 11 million pounds (5 million kilograms), it was once the largest electric shovel in the world. The bucket could hold 150 tons (136,000 kilos). Brutus was retired in 1974 and was in danger of being scrapped. But in 1985, it was dedicated as a museum and memorial and in 2018 was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
